Herne Bay tennis club members have had a busy couple of weeks with numerous matches in all 3 leagues taking place during the week, in the evenings as well as the usual weekend matches. In the Kent League the 3rd team completed all their division 5 matches with 2 wins and this means they are undefeated for the season and will contest the final play-off for the division title in September as well as gaining them promotion to division 4 for next summer. Their penultimate match was away to Canterbury 4 which they won 3-1 and they followed this with a 4-0 win at home to Kemsing 1 who were only able to field one pair. The successful team for these 2 matches was James Wren/Caroline Mitchell and Ian Cooke/Christine Hanson against Canterbury and Matt Hoffmeister replaced Cooke against Kemsing. The mens 3rd team is another Herne Bay team who are having a very good season in division 9. They won their latest match against Shooters Hill 1, the only other unbeaten team in the division, by just 1 game. Alex Kazakeos and Ben Clacy won both their rubbers 6-3, 6-2 & 6-0, 6-2 while Matt Hoffmeister and Greg Pearson lost both theirs 4-6, 3-6 & 0-6, 1-6. When the games were counted the Bay was found to have won by 32-31. The team have one match left to play against Sydenham 4 at the end of the month and if they win that they will win promotion to division 8. Mens 1 have also been busy playing matches in division 2. They travelled to Greenwich to play the Tennis centre 1st team and were unlucky to lose 3-1 although 3 of the 4 rubbers went to Championship tie-breaks. They then played Blackheath 2 away in desperate need of a 1st win in 4 starts and they managed it magnificently 4-0 only dropping 13 games. Peter Elsden/Dominic Wood beat the Blackheath 1st pair 6-1, 6-0 and then the 2nds 6-0, 6-4 while Martin Beckley/Graham Miles were 6-3, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-2 winners. Finally the mixed 1st team had a walk-over against Tunbridge Wells 3 in division 1 when they were unable to send a team to Herne Bay. The 1st team have now won all their matches with 2 left to play.

In the Dover & District league all the Herne Bay teams have been enjoying the better weather and playing lots of matches. The mens A team played Chilham away in division 3 and won very easily 4-0 and only dropped 6 games. The team was Alex Kazakeos/Ben Clacy and Graham Miles/Martin Beckley. The team have won 3 out of 3 matches but still have 7 matches left to play. The mens B team have not fared as well with 2 defeats in the last 2 weeks in division 4. They lost 1-3 to Pfizer C with Bob Toye and Gary Smith winning 2 sets and then they lost by 3 sets to 5 to River B, this time Peter Grimwood and Jerry Loader won 2 sets and Smith and Toye 1. The team will hope to do better in the 2nd half of the season. The ladies team had a win against Canterbury at home when the opposition could only bring one pair and then they drew against Walmer away with both teams winning 4 sets each. Although Herne Bay was the winners on games this will not be counted unless the result of the league depends on it. The teams for these 2 matches were Mary Gibbon/Christine Hanson and Mary Haldin/Liz Harvey against Canterbury and Gibbon/Hanson and Harvey/Diana High against Walmer. In the mixed league mixed A played St Margarets at home and Ash away in division 2 and won both by 5 sets to 3. In the match against St Margarets Peter Grimwood/Debbie Holden won 6-1, 6-3 in both rubbers and Dave Lawrence/Christina Bell drew I rubber 5-7, 6-4 and lost the other 5-7, 1-6. In the Ash match Graham Miles played with Bell and they won 3 sets while Grimwood/Holden won 2. The team have played 4 out of their 10 matches and are currently undefeated. The mixed B team are also in division 2 and they played Hythe B during the week at home. Unfortunately they lost by 3 sets to 5. Alex Kazakeos partnered Anya Stileman and they won one rubber 6-2, 7-6 and lost the other 3-6, 3-6. Sue Toye played with Matt Hoffmeister and they won a set against the opposition’s 2nd pair. The B team have only played 2 matches so far and have yet to win.

Finally in the Kent midweek league the mixed 1st team recorded another win when they beat Canterbury 3-1 at home. Martin Beckley/Gill Dickey had a close match against the Canterbury 1st pair and eventually beat them in a championship tie-break. They then went on to beat the 2nd pair easily. The Bay’s 2nd pair of Keith Clark/Christine Hanson won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, against the 2nd pair but lost to their 1st pair. The ladies 2nd team had 2 matches in division 2. The 1st was against Next Generation which they lost 4-0 but in the 2nd at home to Sevenoaks they won 3-1. Debbie Holden/Diana High won both their rubbers and Sue Toye/Mary Haldin won one and lost the other in a championship tie-break.

Herne Bay tennis club have found recently that the weather interfered with the midweek matches but not those at the weekend. In the Kent league the ladies 3rd team won at home to Brenchley and Matfield 2 in division 6. Their 1st pair was Diana High/Sue Toye and they won 6-0, 6-1; 7-5, 6-1 while the 2nd pairing of Christina Bell/Mary Haldin won equally well 6-2, 6-3; 6-2, 6-2. It was the team’s 2nd win of the season and they have 2 more matches left to play. In the mixed competitions there were wins for both the 1st and 3rd teams. The 1st team travelled to Beckenham to play their 1st team in the top division and managed to win by 9 games. Both pairs beat the opposition’s 2nd pair and lost to their first. Dominic Wood/Sally Holmes lost 5-7, 1-6 and then won 6-0, 6-1 while Peter Elsden/Gill Dickey won 6-2, 6-2 and then lost 6-7, 5-7. The match was tied 2-2 on rubbers and 4-4 on sets but Herne Bay won by 41 games to 32. It was the teams 2nd win. The mixed 3rd team had a much more convincing win against Bexley 3rd team at home in division 5 by 4 rubbers to nil. James Wren and Caroline Mitchell won 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-4 and Ian Cooke and Christine Hanson 6-2, 6-2 and 7-5, 6-3 giving the team their 3rd win of the season. Mens 3 also secured a 4-0 win at home against St John’s in division 9. Although the team were missing their captain Lionel Hoskins, who is in hospital after undergoing brain surgery, they were able to win without dropping a rubber. Ben Clacy and Alex Kazakeos won both their rubbers without dropping a set while Peter Grimwood and Mark Kennard had to fight much harder to win both their rubbers in 3 sets. Other teams were not as successful with the depleted ladies and mens 1st teams losing to Sundridge Park and Sevenoaks respectively and the mixed 2nd team lost to Bromley Cricket Club. In the only midweek match to survive the rain the mixed veteran’s team beat Margate 4-0 away in the Kent League. The team was Anne Gibbs/Keith Clark and Martin Beckley/Sarah Pout.
The Wilson Dover & District league dominated matches during the week with 4 Herne Bay teams playing. In the 3rd division the mens A team continued their good form with a 7 sets to 1 win against St Margarets at home. Bay’s first pair, Alex Kazakeos/Ben Clacy, drew against the opposition’s 1st pair winning the first set 6-1 and then dropping the 2nd 7-5 after being ahead. In their second round they won 6-4, 6-1. The second Herne Bay pair were James Wren and Mark Kennard. They won 6-4, 7-6 against the St Margaret’s number one’s and 6-1, 6-2 against the number 2’s. The depleted mens B team suffered a heavy defeat against a very strong Walmer D team away in division 4. Gary Smith and Peter Grimwood won a set against their second pair in a 7-1 defeat. In the mixed division 2 competition the two Herne Bay team were playing against each other and the A team were winners by 7 sets to 1. The A team was Dave Lawrence/Caroline Mitchell and Peter Grimwood/Debbie Holden while the B team was Matt Hoffmeister/Christine Hanson and Andy Cannon/Anya Stileman. In the ladies Kent League midweek match against Canterbury the Herne Bay team won by a set in a close encounter. The Bay’s 1st pair, Anne Gibbs/Gill Dickey, won both their rubbers in straight sets and their second pair, Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson, took a set from the Canterbury 2nd pair but went on to lose 10-7 in a deciding match tie break. This set proved crucial with the teams tied at 2 rubbers all but Herne Bay were the winners by 5 sets to 4.

There were only 2 matches played at the weekend, one in the Kent league and one in the East Kent league. The mens 3rd team travelled to Parklangley to play their 4th team in division 9 and won 3-1. Alex Kazakeos/Ben Clacy and Peter Grimwood/Greg Pearson both won their first round matches without dropping a set and in the 2nd round both pairs were level at 1 set all when the opposition announced they did not wish to play the final sets as Herne Bay were already the victors on sets. In the end the 2nd round was halved to give the Herne Bay team a 3-1 victory. In the East Kent match our ladies 1st team played a very strong Walmer 1 at home in extremely blustery conditions. The Walmer team were victors against Sarah Pout/Caroline Mitchell and Christine Hanson/Debbie Holden.

Herne Bay players have been involved in county games over the last few weeks. Sally Holmes helped the ladies 50’s team defeat Buckinghamshire by a set when she won both her rubbers playing with Jo Salmon of Sevenoaks. Peter Elsden and Dominic Wood played for the 45’s team at home against Norfolk and despite their 2 wins the team lost 3-2. Finally Sally Holmes and Anne Gibbs were the first winners of the Canterbury Polo Farm ladies doubles cup when they defeated Sue Boffey and Virginia Bower 6-3, 6-2 in the final.

This was a quiet week for Herne Bay tennis club with only a few matches being played due to bad weather and postponements. In the Kent League the mixed 1st team started their summer fixtures in division 1 with a win at home to Margate 1st team. Bay’s first pair, Sally Holmes/Dominic Wood, won both their rubbers against their local rivals in straight sets and Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs won one rubber in straight sets and lost their other 6-4 in the third set. The other matches that took place were in the midweek league. The mens veteran’s team also played Margate at home and proved to be far too strong for them. The team dropped only 4 games in winning all 4 rubbers. The team was Keith Clark/Gary Sims and Martin Beckley/Brian Cooper. The ladies were also playing in the midweek league and they took on Broadstairs at home in division 1. The team recorded a 3-1 win with 1st pair, Anne Gibbs/Gill Dickey winning both their rubbers and the Bay’s second pair, Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson, winning against their opposition’s 2nd pair without dropping a game and then playing a marathon match against their first pair. Eventually they lost 7-5, 5-7 10-12 in a deciding match tie break.
