Herne Bay tennis club finally completed the winter season with a win in the final of the Kent League division 1 men’s veterans competition. The much delayed final was played at Herne Bay against Bromley LTC 1 and was a close encounter. The Bay’s 1st pair, Martin Beckley/Dominic Wood, won both their rubbers in straight sets while their 2nd pair, Ian Cooke/Graham Miles, lost one rubber in a match tie break and the other in a 2nd set tie break. Overall the score was level on rubbers but Herne Bay were triumphant by 5 sets to 4 and lifted the division shield for the 1st time. In the summer Kent league matches the mixed 3rd team had a convincing 4-0 win away to Meopham in division 5. The team of James Wren/Caroline Mitchell and Ben Clacy/Christine Hanson won all their rubbers very easily.

The Dover & District league started this week and several Herne Bay teams were in action. The mens A team played Chilham at home in division 3 and had an impressive 8 sets to nil win. The team was Alex Kazakeos/Ben Clacy and Graham Miles/Mark Kennard. In division 4 the mens B team had a much closer match against Pfizer C at home and won narrowly by 34 games to 30. The Bay’s 1st pair of Gary Smith/Peter Grimwood drew against the opposition’s 1st pair, 6-0,4-6 and then beat their 2nd pair 6-2 6-1. The new 2nd pairing, Dan Dickey/Dave Clemence, lost to the Pfizer 1st pair and then drew with their second which gave a tie overall on sets but a win by just 4 games. In the mixed division 2 Herne Bay A beat Ash at home by 6 sets to 2. Val Bell/Peter Grimwood beat both pairs and Dave Lawrence/Christina Bell beat the Ash 2nd pair.
