Herne Bay tennis club look forward to the start of the summer season at the weekend after a few weeks rest at the end of the winter, unfortunately the snow on Sunday prevented the first matches from being played but the club still had a successful opening on the Saturday and mixed 1 were able to play their Kent League Winter Division 1 Final away at Margate. Both teams were under strength due to injury and Margate were able to take the victory by 3 rubbers to 1. In the 1st round the Bay’s 1st pairing of Sally Holmes and Dominic Wood lost to the Margate 1st pair in straight sets but beat their second string 7-6, 6-3. Herne Bay’s second pair, Peter Elsden & Gill Dickey, who were playing together for the 1st time had a marathon 1st round match lasting 2 hours which they eventually lost 5-7, 7-5, 6-7. In their second round they lost narrowly to Margate’s 1st pair 6-3, 7-6 having recovered from a 5-1 deficit in the second set. Herne Bay still have 2 winter finals outstanding both of which have been postponed due the bad weather. The ladies 1st team will now play Tunbridge Wells 1 in the division 1 play off on Friday 18th April and the men’s veterans team will play Bromley LTC 1 at home on the 12th.

Herne Bay tennis club were well represented in the Kent Winter Veterans Final held at Bromley Tennis centre Newstead on Sunday. Keith Clark and Gary Sims retained their Men’s 60 doubles title for the 3rd year running when they defeated David Balow and Ray Murray 6-4, 6-2. Then Sally Holmes and Anne Gibbs won the Ladies’ 50 doubles title with a straight sets win over Myra Hunter and Sally Sawyer, 6-3, 6-2. Club members are still in contention for the KM Finals in 2 weeks with players in semi-finals in the ladies doubles, mens doubles and the mixed doubles.
