Tennis Report for w/e 9/3/08

Herne Bay tennis club played their last 2 matches in the Kent league winter groups and recorded two wins. The ladies 1st team travelled to Bromley Cricket Club to play their first team in the top division knowing that a win would put them into the final for the first time. One member of the team was unavailable due to having knee surgery but the rest of the team were still able to win. Their first pair of Sally Holmes/Gill Dickey won both their rubbers easily and although the second pair, Louise Tucker/Caroline Mitchell, did not win a rubber they won enough games to clinch the match by 4 games. The team will now play Tunbridge Wells 1 away in the final this coming weekend. The other team to complete their matches was the ladies veterans team who beat Tunbridge Wells 2 away 3-1 in division 1. The team was Anne Gibbs and Sally Homes and Sarah Pout and Debbie Holden. The team won 3 matches and lost 1 through the season.

Herne Bay also celebrated another team reaching a divisional final even though they did not play at the wekend. The mixed first team had finished all their matches in division 1 with only one defeat and they had to wait for the result of the last group game to see if they stiil qualified for the final. Luckily the result of that match between Tunbridge Wells 1 and Bromley LTC 1 went in Herne Bay’s favour and they have progressed to the final against Margate 1 by virtue of a superior winning rubbers percentage. The final is a repeat of last year’s and Herne Bay will hope to do better than their 4-0 defeat last tme.
