Herne Bay tennis club members have spent the last 2 weeks dodging the rain and wind while playing matches. In the Kent league the mixed 1st team played their 1st match of the season in division 1 away to Bromley LTC 2 and won 3-1. In the 1st round Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs narrowly lost to the Bromley 1st pair 10-8 in a match tie-break. They had lost the 1st set 4-6 then stormed back to take the 2nd to love but were unable to keep the momentum going into the tie-break. Bay’s second pair, Martin Beckley/Louise Tucker, were playing an eleven year old girl ranked number 8 in the UK but their height and consistency meant they won 6-4, 6-2. In the second round Elsden and Gibbs had an easy win over the youngster and her partner and Beckley/Tucker had a marathon eventually winning 7-6, 6-7, 11-9 after saving 4 match points. The ladies 3rd team had their 1st win in division 7 at home to Bromley Wendover 2 despite 2 of their team missing. All the sets were won very easily by Christine Hanson/Diana High and Anja Stileman/Judy Wright with the loss of just 7 games by each pair.
In the East Kent league men’s 1 played men’s 2 and an upset occurred when the 2nd team won by 5 sets to 4. The 1st team had to concede 3 sets because of an injury at the start of the match to one of their players. In the rubbers that were played the 1st team’s Gary Smith/Dave Lawrence had a very close match against the 2nd team’s Alex Kazakeos/Dan Walker which they won 7-5, 5-7 11-9 in the match tie-break and then beat the 2nd team’s Steve Howard/Jason Hollingsworth 6-0, 6-1. The 2nd team won the other 2 rubbers 6-3, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0 against the injured Bryan Packham and Greg Pearson. In their 2nd match of the season the 2nd team played Sandwich at home and although they lost the match Kazakeos/Walker took both Sandwich pairs to a match tie-break.
In the Kent midweek mixed veterans league Herne Bay played 2 matches and won them both 4-0. In the 1st match against David Lloyd Kingshill Keith Clark/Kay Mileham won both their rubbers in straight sets while Brian Cooper/Anne Gibbs needed a second set tie break to beat the Kingshill 1st pair. The 2nd natch was against local rivals Canterbury and in an enjoyable and competitive match the Bay pairs won all their rubbers without dropping a set. The team for this match was the same as against Kingshill except that Martin Beckley replaced Cooper.
Finally there have been several matches in the Dover and District league for the Herne Bay teams. The men’s A winning away against Walmer C by 5 sets to 3 was the best result. Bryan Packham/Martin Beckley beat the 1st pair 6-4, 6-2 and the 2nd pair 6-3, 6-3 while Graham Miles/Gary Smith halved the match with the first pair 4-6, 6-3 and lost to the 2nd pair 4-6, 4-6. The ladies team travelled to Knoll ATC, Ashford to play their A team and drew 4-4. Liz Harvey/Debbie Holden won one rubber and halved their 2nd while Diana High/Denise Parrett halved their match against the 2nd pair. The mixed A team had 2 matches in division 1 losing them both by 3 sets to 5. In the match against Knoll ATC A at Knoll Martin Beckley/Danielle Miles won the 3 sets. In the 2nd match against away to Bridge A Eddie Fisher played Anne Gibbs on a very windy evening and having chosen to serve 1st he proceeded to serve 4 double faults! Luckily the pair recovered from the disastrous start to win that rubber 6-2, 6-1 and half their second rubber 2-6, 6-2. The Bay’s 2nd pair fought hard but were unable to win a set. Mixed B are enjoying their matches in division 2 but have not managed a win so far. In their latest match at home to Canterbury C they were much more competitive and won 2 sets. The team was Toby Brown/Caroline Packer and Gary Smith/Lesley Taylor.
