Teams at Herne Bay tennis club have struggled on over the last few weeks battling the wind and rain and hoping that the summer will arrive soon. In the Kent league ladies 1 played their 3rd match in division 1 at home to Sevenoaks 2 and won 4-0. The score flattered the home side since 3 of the 4 rubbers went to deciding match tie-breaks but showed their battling qualities particularly in the 2nd round when both pairs came back to win after dropping the 1st set. The team was Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs and Kay & Nicola Mileham. It was the team’s second win and they have 2 more matches to play. Ladies 3 also had a good win at home to United (Hawkhurst) in division 7 by 3 sets to 1. Denise Parrett /Christine Hanson won both their rubbers and Vanessa Webb/Judy Wright won one. It was the team’s second win of the season and they have one match left to play. Mixed 2 played Bearsted 1 away in division 3 and won 3-1. Graham & Danielle Miles won both their rubbers 6-4, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-1 and Jerry Loader/Debbie Holden beat the opposition 2nd pair 6-1, 6-3. The team are unbeaten so far this season. In the midweek leagues there were 4-0 wins for ladies 1, ladies 2 and the mixed veteran’s teams. Ladies 1 played David Lloyd Kingshill away in division 1 and managed the windy conditions much better than the opposition only dropping 11 games in 4 rubbers. The team was Kay Mileham/Anne Gibbs and Debbie Holden/Sue Toye. The ladies 2 also played a David Lloyd team, this time Dartford, and they were at home in division 3. The winning team, in their 1st match of the season, was Christine Hanson/Diana High and Lizzie Harvey/Mary Haldin. The mixed veterans team travelled to LA Fitness in Maidstone and the team was Martin Beckley/Kay Mileham and Brian Cooper/Anne Gibbs.
In the East Kent league men’s 1 and ladies 2 were winners. The men’s 1st team played the new team in division 2, Deal Indoor Centre, away and won by 5 sets to 4. Both teams won 2 rubbers but Bay’s 1st pair of Dave Lawrence/Gary Smith took a set off the Deal 1st pair to clinch the match as well as beating their second pair. Bay’s other pair, Steve Howard/Greg Pearson, also beat the 2nd pair. The ladies 2 match was also against Deal Indoor centre but this time at home and they won 3-1. Vanessa Webb/Anja Stileman won a close 1st rubber 7-6, 7-5 and then won easily against the Deal 2nd pair, 6-0, 6-1. Vivienne Lord/Judy Wright also beat their 2nd pair 6-2, 6-1. It was a welcome win for the team after 2 heavy defeats in their 1st 2 matches. In the Dover and District league men’s A have had 2 4 all draws at home to Walmer C and Knoll B in division 2. The team for both matches was Martin Beckley/Bryan Packham and Graham Miles/Gary Smith. In the match against Walmer C both pairs beat the Walmer 2nd pair and lost to their 1st and in the match against Knoll B Miles/Smith won one rubber and halved the other. Beckley and Packham were hampered by an injury to Beckley’s arm and were only able to half the rubber against the Knoll number 2 pair. The ladies also played a Knoll B team away at Wye and won by 5 sets to 3. In the 1st round both pairs halved their rubbers although the Bay 2nd pair, Diana High/Lizzie Harvey, had a match point which they unfortunately failed to convert. In the second round Anne Gibbs/Vivienne Lord had become accustomed to each other and the windy conditions and beat the 2nd pair7-6, 6-0. High/Harvey again shared the sets with the Knoll 1st pair giving the 5-3 victory. In the return match at home a week later Bay could only win 2 sets and lost 6-2. Diana High with Vanessa Webb being the successful pair.
