Herne Bay tennis club’s mixed 2nd team finished their fixtures in division 3 of the Kent League with a 3-1 win away to Frindsbury 1. The team have now won 4 of their 5 matches and must hope that Bromley Cricket Club 1 slip up in their last match to allow them to progress through to the play-off. If they achieve this it would mean a clean sweep for all the Herne Bay mixed teams with the 1st team winning their group in division 1 and the 3rd tam division 5. This is something that has not happened before at the club. The mixed 2nd team players were Gill Dickey/Martin Beckley and Louise Tucker/Keith Clark. The ladies midweek 1st team beat Chipstead at home in division 1 by 4 rubbers to 0. The 1st round went very easily for the Bay but in the 2nd round Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson dropped a set to the opposition’s 1st pair and Anne Gibbs/Gill Dickey struggled to beat the 2nd pair 6-1, 6-4. The team have 1 match remaining and if they win that they will be champions for the 10th time. The mens veteran’s team completed their fixtures in division 1A when they beat Broadstairs away 4-0. The team, Gary Sims/Keith Clark and Martin Beckley/Brian Cooper, will now have a play-off against Canterbury 1 for the league title.

In the Dover and District league the Mixed A team completed a perfect season in division 2 with a 3-1 win against St Margarets. They did not lose a match all season and look forward to their promotion to the top division. The team was Graham Miles/Christina Bell and Peter Grimwood/Debbie Holden. The Mens A team also finished their excellent season in division 3 with a 7 sets to 1 win against Harbour Polo at home. This was their 7th win out of 8 matches and also was their revenge against the only team who had beaten them all season. The team anticipate some tough matches in division 2 next summer. The winning team was Ben Clacy/Alex Kazakeos and Mark Kennard/Graham Miles. The ladies also completed their matches with a 6 sets to 2 win at home to Bridge. The ladies made a slow start to the season so with 5 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat they may just fail to retain their champion’s trophy. Christine Hanson/Mary Gibbon and Debbie Holden/Diana High made up the team.

Finally in the Kent ladies 50’s match at home to South Wales Anne Gibbs helped the team to a much needed 3-1 win when she won both her rubbers playing with Sue Hornsby (Bromley Cricket Club). The team have now won 2 matches with one left to play.
