Herne Bay tennis club teams have been playing the remaining few matches in the Kent league over the last few weeks. The season has carried on well into the extension period and caused fixture congestion due to the poor weather throughout most of the summer. The ladies 1st team completed their last match in division 1 with a 3-1 win at home to Bromley LTC 2. Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs won both their rubbers in straight sets but had a close match against the Bromley number ones winning 7-5, 6-3. Bay’s second pair, Danielle Miles/Sue Toye, beat the opposition’s 2nd pair 7-5, 6-1 but lost to their 1st pair. The win means that the team have finished 2nd in the division with 3 wins and 2 defeats. The men’s 1st team also finished off their season in division 2 with a 3-1 win. They were at home to Sevenoaks 1. in the 1st round Peter Elden/Keith Clark played a close 3 setter winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 while Graham Miles/Martin Beckley had a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win. In the second round Elsden & Clark won in straight sets and Miles& Beckley lost to give the 3-1 score line. The men have won 3 out of 5 matches and will finish either 2nd or 3rd in the division. The men’s 2 and 3 teams were both given walkovers at the weekend and this means that men’s 2 will finish mid table in division 7 and men’s 3 should remain in division 8 next summer. Herne Bay mixed teams have not fared as well with both mixed 1 (division 1) and mixed 3 (division 5) being relegated. Mixed 2 still have 2 matches remaining but have won 2 matches so far in division 3. The mixed 4th team secured their 1st win of the season in division 7 at home to Maidstone. Sarah Pout/Dave Lawrence won both their rubbers 7-5, 6-2 and 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 and Vanessa Webb/Dave Clements beat the opposition 1st pair 6-2, 6-3. The team have one match remaining against the bottom team in the division and as long as they win they will stay in division 7 next summer.
Herne Bay teams have also been playing in the Kent midweek leagues. The ladies 1st team had a comfortable 4-0 win against Canterbury in division 1 at home. Danielle Miles/Christine Hanson won both their rubbers easily while Sarah Pout/Anne Gibbs beat the opposition’s 1st pair easily and then had to come back from losing the 1st 3 games to their 2nd pair to win 6-3, 6-1. The team have one match left against Bearsted 1 which should decide the league winners. The ladies 2 team had a shock in division 3 when they lost 1-3 away to United , a team that they had beaten easily 4-0 the previous season. Mary Gibbon/Debbie Holden won the only rubber 6/1 4/6 1/0 against the United 2nd pair. The mixed veteran’s team won away at Crescent, Sidcup 4-0 but the match was much closer than the final score reveals. In the 1st round Keith Clark/Sue Toye struggled to win 7-5, 7-5 and Anne Gibbs/Brian Cooper only won in a match tie-break. The second round saw Clark & Toye recover from a 4-0 deficit to win 7-5, 6-3 and Gibbs & Cooper won 6-1, 6-2. The team is unbeaten with 2 matches remaining. The men’s veterans team played twice winning easily away to Bearsted but losing by a set to Canterbury. Keith Clark/Gary Sims and Martin Beckley /Bryan Packham played against Bearsted and Clark/Beckley and Gary Smith/Packham against Canterbury. Clark and Beckley won both their rubbers against Canterbury but dropped a set to their 1st pair. The defeat means that the team will finish 2nd to Canterbury in the division.
Finally there have been several matches in both the Dover & District and East Kent leagues but despite having enjoyable matches there were no victories for Herne Bay teams. In the Dover and Distinct league the ladies had a competitive match away to Hythe A just losing by 3 sets to 5 but they and mixed A were heavily beaten by Knoll A and Walmer A respectively. The men’s 2nd team were unlucky to lose 0-4 at home to Ashford, Wye in East Kent division 2. Alex Kazakeos/Dan Walker fought back from a 2-5 deficit in the 2nd set against the opposition’s second pair only to lose in a tie-break. The team have finished all their matches winning 2 out of 5. The EK ladies 2 team had an enjoyable match away to Canterbury despite losing 1-3. Vanessa Webb/Mary Gibbon lost 2-6, 1-6 to the Canterbury 1st pair but the score does not reflect the match as they kept the opposition on court for nearly two hours with all except for three games going to deuce. Judy Wright/Diana High won the only rubber 6-4, 6-3 against the Canterbury 2nd pair. The ladies 2nd team are finding matches very tough in a division full of 1st teams but they have won one match so far with one to play.
