14th May. 13

A blustery week along the North Kent coast made tennis very diificult to play at Herne Bay tennis club. In the Kent League matches that were played this week there were wins for the teams playing away from home (and the strong wind) and defeats for most of the home matches. Mixed 1 had to contend with the swirling conditions twice at home in division 2 and were also without their number one man due to injury. They lost both matches, 1-3 to Canterbury 2 and 0-4 to Bromley Wendover 1. Martin Beckley/Louise Tucker won the only rubber but in both matches they lost out in match tie-breaks to the opposition’s 1st pairs. In the mixed 2 match played at home against Bearsted 1 in division 3 the wind had subsided a little and the team won by a set. Bearsted had a strong 1st pair, which Bay’s Keith Clark/Sue Toye managed to take a set against, and then a much weaker 2nd pair. Both Clark & Toye and Graham Miles/Sarah Pout beat them 6-2, 6-1 and the match was won by 5 sets to 4 and 38 games to 31. Ladies 3 travelled to David Lloyd Kings Hill in division 7 and escaped the wind and the rain. They won by the score line of 3-1 for the 3rd consecutive match. The consistent team was Christine Hanson/Diana High, who won both their rubbers, and Vanessa Webb/Anja Stileman who won one. The team are looking very likely to win promotion to division 6 if they can carry on and win their last 2 matches. There was mixed success for the 2 Herne Bay mens teams playing this weekend. Men’s 2 travelled to Tunbridge Wells to play their 5th team in division 7 and lost by 4 games. The Bay’s 1st pair of Ian Cooke/Jerry Loader, won both their rubbers in straight sets but unfortunately the second pair of Alex Kazakeos/James Ley found the fast surface difficult to cope with and were unable to win a set. The match was tied on rubbers and sets but they lost by 39 games to 43. Men’s 3 were more successful playing away at Bearsted against their 3rd team in division 9 – they won 3-1. Dave Lawrence/Eddie Fisher won both their rubbers 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-1 while Bob Toye/Dave Clements played match tie-breaks in both rubbers winning one and losing the other.
