Herne Bay tennis club has had an excellent couple of weeks winning 9 out of the 11 matches they played and the weekend just gone saw a 100% record for the 5 teams involved in Kent League matches. The excellent spell started with a convincing win for the ladies team against Deal ITC 1 in the Deal Indoor league. Nicola & Kay Mileham and Caroline Packer/Sue Toye won all of their sets without dropping more that 3 games in any of them. They are currently unbeaten in the league with 2 matches left to play. The success continued into the Kent League for the ladies veterans 2nd team when they thrashed Bromley Cricket Club 2 4-0 away in division 3. Debbie Holden/Vanessa Webb extended their unbeaten record to 4 rubbers with 2 comprehensive wins and Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson also won both their rubbers although they were taken to a tie-break in their 1st set against the opposition’s 2nd pair. The team played again this weekend away to Chipstead Place 1 and won, this time 3-1. Diana High replaced Pout in the team and she and Hanson contributed one rubber to the win. Webb & Holden were again unbeaten and the team go into their final match with a 100% record and a good chance of winning promotion for the 2nd successive season. The mens 3rd team also recorded 2 wins in successive weeks in division 9. In their 1st match at home to Bromley LTC 3 they won 3-1 and then followed up with another win by the same score away to Brenchley & Matfield 2. In the home match Bryan Packham/Greg Pearson won both their rubbers although they needed a deciding tie-break to beat the Bromley 2nd pair and Eddie Fisher/Lionel Hoskins beat the 2nd pair in a tie-break and then 6-0. In the away match Mark Townsend replaced Pearson and he combined well with Packham to win one rubber 6-4, 7-6 and narrowly lose their second in a deciding tie-break. Hoskins & Fisher had better luck against the opposition’s 1st pair when they beat them in a deciding tie-break and then went on to drop just one game in their 2nd rubber. The team have now completed all their matches and finished with 2 wins out of 5 matches and in 4th place in the division. The mens 1st team were very busy but also very successful this weekend with matches on both days. They travelled to Maidstone for their 1st match in division 4 and then played Deal ITC 1 at home in their second. Both matches were very close and the Bay won by 7 games in the 1st and by 2 sets in the second. Against Maidstone, Peter Elsden/Ian Cooke and Graham Mile/Jerry Loader, both won one rubber each against the Maidstone 2nd pair and lost to their strong 1st pair. The match was tied at 2 rubbers all and 4 sets all but Herne Bay won by 36 games to 29. In their 2nd match of the weekend against Deal ITC 1 Miles & Cooke teamed up and Fisher played with Loader. The win followed the same pattern as for the previous match when both pairs beat the opposition’s 2nd pair very easily but lost to their 1st pair. This time both pairs managed to win a set before finally succumbing in match tie-breaks so the win this time was by 6 sets to 4. The team finished 2nd in the division with 2 wins. Both the ladies 1st team and the mens 2nd team had very close matches that they managed to win by a few games. The ladies 1st team beat Beckenham 2 in division 1 on a windy and wet afternoon in Herne Bay with Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs winning both their rubbers and Danielle Miles/Kay Mileham chipping in with enough games to secure the win by 7 games.. The win secured 2nd place in the top division for the team. The mens 2nd team also played at home against Blackheath 4 in division 7 and knew that a win would secure their place in the division for next winter. Gary Smith/Guy Farmer won both their rubbers and Mark Townsend/Arie Fielder-Guerts narrowly lost one rubber 6-7, 4-6. The match was tied on rubbers and sets and Herne Bay won by 38 games to 35 and the team will remain in the division. The ladies veterans 1st team narrowly lost out on winning division 1 when they went down to a 1-3 defeat at home to fellow title contenders Tunbridge Wells 1. Nicola & Kay Mileham won the only Bay rubber. In the mens over 60’s league Lionel Hoskins/Greg Pearson won the only rubber in the team’s 1-3 defeat at home to Bearsted 1 in division 2. The team have now won 2 matches and lost 2 with one left to play.
