Herne Bay tennis cub has had a very busy few weeks playing matches in 4 different leagues. In the Kent league the most successful team was the mens 3 who won all their matches finishing an excellent season in division 9 of the Kent league with a win by 1 set against Sydenham 6. The team was Alex Kazakeos/Ben Clacy and Matt Hoffmeister/Peter Grimwood. Kazakeos and Clacy won both their rubbers 7-5, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-3 and Hoffmeister/Grimwood lost to their second pair 6-4, 6-4, and then lost to their first pair 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Their clinching of a set against the Sydenham 1st pair gave Herne Bay the victory and secured their promotion to division 8 for next season plus a place in the divisional play-off at home in September. Mens 1 also played twice in Kent league division 2 winning against Bromley 2 by 3 sets to one and losing by a similar score to Sydenham 2. Both matches were at Herne Bay and the team was Peter Elsden/Dominic Wood for both matches and Martin Beckley with Alex Kazakeos against Bromley and with James Wren against Sydenham. The team have now completed their matches and with 2 wins should hold onto their place in division 2 for next season. Ladies 1 played their 4th match of 5 in division 1 at home to Bexley 1 and won 3-1. Their task was made easier when one of the opposition’s first pair was hurt at match point down in her 1st rubber and was unable to play in her 2nd rubber. Sally Holmes and Gill Dickey won both their rubbers. The team have now won 2 matches and have one left to play. Ladies 2 completed their league matches in division 5 with a hard fought 3-1 win at home to Hythe. Christine Hanson/Debbie Hanson won both their rubbers, one in 3 sets, and Caroline Mitchell/Sarah Pout won I and lost the other both in 3 sets. The team won 3 of 5 matches and will remain in division 5 next season.

In the Kent midweek league the mixed veterans continued their unbeaten run which has lasted for 10 years with a 4-0 win away to Crescent of Sidcup. The team was Anne Gibbs/Peter Grimwood and Sarah Pout/Keith Clark. All rubbers were won in straight sets and the team have one match left to play before they can claim their 11th successive title. The ladies 2nd team were unlucky to lose away to Hartley country club in division 2 when they drew on rubbers but lost by 6 sets to 4. The team of Mary Haldin/Pauline Pierce and Mary Gibbon/Diana High both beat the 2nd pair in 3 sets and lost in straight sets to the first. The team have played 4 of their 5 matches and won only one so they need another win in their last match to ensure they remain in the same division next summer.

In the East Kent league the only team to win was the mens 1st team who beat Walmer 1 4-0 in division 1 but then followed up with a 4-0 defeat against Faversham. The team for both matches was Graham Miles/Ian Cooke and Martin Beckley/James Wren and with 2 matches left to play the team have only recorded one win so far. The only other team to have played in this league was mixed 3 and they lost 4-0 to a very strong UK Paper side after arriving late to the match due to going to the match secretary’s home in Detling first rather than the club ground in Sittingbourne.

Finally, the matches in the Dover & District league have dominated the league programme at Herne Bay over the last 2 weeks. Even with some matches called off due to bad weather there were still 12 matches played by the 5 teams in this league. The mens A team played 3 times and won twice, they beat both Walmer C at home and St Margaret’s away by 4 rubbers to nil but lost to Harbour Polo away on very wet, slippery grass. This was the team’s 1st defeat of the season in division 3 and hopefully, since they only lost by 2 sets, this will not affect their chances of promotion. They have 2 matches left to play one of which is against Harbour Polo at home when they hope to gain their revenge for the away defeat. The teams for the 3 matches were Ben Clacy/Alex Kazakeos for every match and then the other members were Mark Kennard , Graham Miles, James Wren, Peter Grimwood and Dave Lawrence. The Mens B team have struggled all season in division 4 and lost to Walmer D. Bob Toye and Gary Sims won one set against their 2nd pair. The ladies team played twice and had a draw against Hythe at home and then a win against the same team away. Debbie Holden and Christine Hanson played in both matches and were partnered by Liz Harvey and Sue Toye and Caroline Mitchell and Mary Gibbon respectively. The team has 2 wins, 2 draws and one defeat so far with 3 matches left to play and they will need to win all of them if they are to retain the title they won last year. In the mixed matches the A and B teams are both in division 2 and they played each other with the A team playing host to the B team. The A team won but it was a very close contest with the victory only being sealed by 5 sets to 3 when their second pair won 6-4 7-5 against the B team’s 2nds. The A team have had 2 other victories in the last few weeks against Ash and Hythe B away and are unbeaten so far. The B team are not doing as well and their only win of the season so far was at home to St Margaret’s when they won by 5 sets to 3. The team for this match was Matt Hoffmeister/Joanna Miles and Alex Kazakeos/Danielle Miles.
