After Murray’s inspiring win last weekend Herne Bay tennis club members have settled back into playing their own matches. In the Dover and District league the mens A team played Hythe B away in division 1 and won by 6 sets to 2. Despite the grass courts being available to play the team did not feel confident enough to emulate the performances they had witnessed at Wimbledon and chose to play on the hard courts. Martin Beckley/Jerry Loader won both their rubbers and Alex Kazakeos/Gary Smith beat the Hythe’s 2nd pair very easily and narrowly lost the 1st set to their 1st pair on a tie-break. This was the team’s 1st win having previously drawn two matches and lost one. The ladies team achieved a creditable draw, 4 sets all, away against Canterbury who were fielding two veteran county players in their team. Both Herne Bay pairs beat Canterbury’s 2nd pair and lost to their 1st. The team was Danielle Mile/Diana High and Anja Stileman/Vanessa Webb. The mixed A team also played at Canterbury against their C team in division 2 the same evening and recorded a similar drawn result. Graham Miles/Caroline Packer won …. and Jerry Loader/Lesley Taylor ….. This was the team’s first draw having won all their other matches.
In the Kent League the ladies 1st team played twice in division 1 and narrowly lost both. Against Canterbury 1 the match hinged on the Championship tie-break played by Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs in the second round but they lost it by 10 points to 8. If they had won the team would have won by 1 game but instead they lost 1-3 with Nicola Mileham/Debbie Holden winning the Herne Bay rubber. The second match was away against Walmer 1, who were top of the division and unbeaten for several seasons. After the 1st round the teams were level on rubbers and sets and Walmer led by 1 game and that was how the match finished with Walmer winning by 31 games to 30. Both Herne Bay pairs Tucker/Gibbs and Mileham/Sue Toye beat the Walmer 2nd pair but just failed to win enough games against their strong first pair. The team have one match remaining which they need to win to stay in division 1 for next summer. Herne Bay’s midweek mixed veterans team finally played their first match of the season during the week, away at David Lloyd Kings Hill, and won very easily 4-0 only dropping 8 games. The team was Anne Gibbs/Martin Beckley and Sarah Pout/Bryan Packham.
