Herne Bay tennis club finished 2013 with some excellent wins in both the Kent and Deal Indoor Leagues. The ladies 3rd team had a convincing 4-0 win at home to Trottiscliffe 3 in division 8. The team of Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson and Denise Parrett/Vanessa Webb won all their rubbers without dropping a set and are top of their division. They have won all 3 of their matches without dropping a rubber and have one match left to play. The ladies 2nd team also played a Trottiscliffe team at home but their 1st team this time and just lost by a set. The strong Trottiscliffe 1st pair won both their rubbers and although the Bay pairs both beat the opposition’s 2nd pair they dropped a set doing so. The team was Debbie Holden/Caroline Packer and Sarah Pout/Kay Mileham. The 1st ladies veterans team had a 4-0 win in their 1st match of the winter at home to Bexley 2 in division 2. The 4 Bay players, Nicola and Kay Mileham and Anne Gibbs/Debbie Holden, were so dominant that they only dropped 2 games over the 8 sets played. It was a very convincing start to their season. The mixed 1st team played their 1st match in division 2 away to Canterbury 2 and just lost by 3 games. Both Herne Bay pairs, Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs and Martin Beckley/Louise Tucker, won their 1st round matches. In the 2nd round Beckley & Tucker lost in straight sets 2-6, 4-6 to the Canterbury 1st pair and in a marathon match Elsden & Gibbs just lost 9-11 in a Championship tie-break after having one match point. The teams were tied on rubbers and sets but Canterbury won by 43 games to 40. The mens 2 also lost a close match away to Sevenoaks 4 in division 7. The unlucky team was Alex Kazakeos/Mark Kennard and Gary Smith/Richard Marshall and although they lost by a set they won more games. This was the second match in a row that the team had lost by a set and they hope to have better luck in 2014. Finally the mixed team had a magnificent 8 sets to 0 win in the Deal Indoor Tennis League agaisnt Ashford 1. The team was Graham Miles/Nicola Mileham and Martin Beckley/Diana High and they are unbeaten in the league so far.
