15/5/18

22nd May. 18

It has been a mixed bag of recent results in the Kent Leagues for Herne Bay Lawn Tennis Club.

Herne Bay Ladies 2 got their summer campaign off to a flyer in Division 3B with a well earned win at home to Tunbridge Wells 4. Bay’s first pair, Kay Mileham/Sue Toye got off to a slow start against a strong Tunbridge pair losing in straight sets. Bay’s second pair Caroline Packer/Debbie Holden on the other hand had little difficulty in their first rubber winning 6-1, 6-1. In the reverse rubbers Packer/Holden eventually overcame the visitor’s first pair winning a 3rd set championship tie-break whilst Mileham/Toye also only lost 2 games against Tunbridge’s second pair. Bay triumphing 3-1.

Ladies 2 then travelled to Meopham for their second match with a slightly changed line up with Toye unavailable and narrowly lost out by the odd set. Denise Parrett stepped in for Toye and forged a strong partnership with Packer and won both their rubbers, although they were taken to a championship tie-break in the first. Mileham linked up this time with Holden and they lost two very tight rubbers in straight sets. With the tie level at 2 rubbers each, Meopham ran out winners 5-4 in sets.

Ladies Midweek 1 also played their first two matches within a week and had similar outcomes to the Ladies 2 team. First they travelled to Sevenoaks to take on their Midweek 1 team in a highly entertaining encounter in Division 1. Bay’s first pair Anne Gibbs/Caroline Packer narrowly lost their first rubber in two close sets 4-6, 6-7 whilst Kay Mileham/Sarah Pout were taken to what turned out to be an all important 3rd set championship tie-break, edging ahead after levelling the first two sets 4-6, 6-4.

The reverse rubbers saw Gibbs/Packer winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-0 and Mileham/Pout losing 2-6, 3-6. Again, with the match tied 2-2 in rubbers, Sevenoaks the winners 5-4 in sets.

As with Ladies 2, the Midweek 1 team had to make some changes to the team but had a far easier time at home to Trottiscliffe with a comfortable 4-0 win. Kay Mileham/Nicola Mileham raced through their opening rubber without losing a game. Caroline Packer/Sue Toye also made relatively light work in theirs winning 6-1, 6-4. The formidable play of the Mileham’s continued to the next rubber where this time they only lost two games. Packer/Toye were taken to 3 sets having lost the 1st set to a tie-breaker, before bouncing back winning the 2nd set 6-1 and taking the 3rd set championship tie-break.

Ladies 1 maintained their 100% record in Division 2B with a fine performance at home to Sevenoaks 3. The experience of Anne/Gibbs/ Louise Tucker saw them through their two rubbers in straight sets whilst the explosive hitting of Danielle Miles/Nicola Mileham saw them blow away their opponents with the loss of only 3 games in each rubber to take the match 4-0.

In their opening match, the Mens Vets Midweek team took on Bearsted Mens Vets 1 in Division 1 and came away with the spoils after a 3-1 win. Bay’s first pair, the ever reliable Graham Miles/Ian Cooke won their first rubber losing just the 4 games whilst Gary Smith/Eddie Fisher did well to overcome the host’s second pair in 3 close sets. The reverse rubbers saw Miles/Cooke press home the visitor’s advantage with a solid 7-5, 6-0 while Smith/Fisher faded a little to lose theirs in straight sets.

Missed chances and a case of ‘what might have been’ was the order of the day when the Men’s 3 team travelled to Trottiscliffe 1 in Division 9B and lost 3-1. The scoreline did not reflect the closeness of the match which saw Keith Curtis/Jason Hollingsworth just lose out after a titanic struggle in their first rubber, that saw the host’s edge it 11-9 in a championship tie-break after two very close sets. In their second rubber, Curtis’ steady play and Hollinsworth’s dominant net play gave a glimmer of hope but alas Bay’s second pairing Colin Thompson/Dave Lawrence lost both their rubbers in straight sets despite having and missing numerous opportunities.

Their second match saw the Men’s 3 team bounce back from their previous disappointment to record a remarkable 4-0 win at home against Canterbury 6 in difficult windy conditions. In their first rubber, Curtis/Hollingsworth established an early 4-1 before the visitor’s clawed it back to 4-4. The Bay pair then regained control to take the set 6-4 before going on to take the second 6-2. Thompson/Lawrence raced through their opening rubber in double quick time without losing a game. In the reverse rubbers Herne Bay continued where they had left off and won both in straight sets.

Herne Bay Ladies Midweek 2 found the going tough in their opener in Division 2 when they travelled to Deal ITC and despite some very close games, came away with a disappointing 1-3 loss. Denise Parrett/Sue Flynn had chances in their rubbers but lost both in straight sets. Isobal Warnock/Tui Thain did well to win their first rubber 6-3, 6-4 before succumbing in their second.

Better luck was had by the Mixed Vets Midweek team who enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 win at home to Canterbury in near perfect tennis conditions. Bay’s pairings of Ian Cooke/Anne Gibbs and Graham Miles/Kay Mileham proved to be far too strong for their opponents on this occasion winning all their rubbers in straight sets to post the perfect start to their campaign.
