The winter season is rapidly drawing to a close for Herne Bay tennis club Kent League teams although some teams have several matches left to play due to postponements earlier in the season. In fact the mens 1st team have just played their 1st match in division 4 away to Tunbridge Wells 2. They lost 1-3 with Graham Miles/Ian Cooke winning the only rubber. They hope to have better results with their other 3 matches in the division. The mens veterans team had better luck the same weekend when they won 3-1 away to Bexley 1 in division 2. Miles & Cooke again played together winning both rubbers and Jerry Loader/Eddie Fisher chipped in with a 6-3, 6-2 win against the opposition’s 2nd pair. The team have now won 3 matches out of 4 and look destined to return to the top division next winter. An under-strength men’s 2nd team played Beckenham 5 at home in division 7 and lost 1-3. Bob Toye/Bryan Packham winning the only rubber in a deciding 10 point tie-break. The team have one match remaining and need a win to ensure their survival in the division. The ladies 3rd team had an excellent 4-0 win at home to DL Beckenham in division 7. The team of Vanessa Webb/Denise Parrett and Christine Hanson/Anja Stileman won all their rubbers easily dropping just 5 games. The team have won 2 matches out of 3 and have one left to play. The mixed 1st team travelled to Canterbury to play their 1st team on a very windy and cold morning and came away with an excellent win by a set. The Herne Bay players, Peter Elsden/Louise Tucker and Graham Miles/Anne Gibbs, seemed to cope better with the conditions than some of the Canterbury players and both beat their 1st pair in straight sets. Both pairs went to a tie-break in the 1st set against the Canterbury 2nd pair which Elsden & Tucker won but subsequently went on to lose in a 10 point tie-break. Miles & Gibbs lost their tie-break 7-5 and then the 2nd set to 2. The match was won by 5 sets to 4 and gave the team their 2nd win of the season. In the midweek leagues the mens over 60’s team had 2 good wins in division 2 at home to Hayes 2 and away to Crescent. Toye & Packham played together in both matches and won all their rubbers although they were taken to a 10 point tie-break by the Crescent 1st pair. For the match against Hayes Greg Pearson partnered Dave Clements and won 1 rubber and for the match away to Crescent Lionel Hoskins was Clements partner. In this match they had to negotiate 2 10 point deciding tie-breaks to ensure the 4-0 win for the team. The ladies over 60’s team also won away to local rivals, Canterbury, by a set. Both Herne Bay pairs,Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson and Anja Stileman/Diana High, beat Canterbury’s 2nd pair and Pout & Hanson took a set from their strong 1st pair. This set proved decisive as the match was won by 5 sets to 4. The team have one match remaining having won 2 and lost one and a win will clinch 2nd place in the division.
There was just one match in the DITL for Herne Bay teams. The mixed 1st team played Hythe 1 and won by 6 sets to 3. Graham Miles/Anne Gibbs won all 4 of their sets only dropping 5 games and Jerry Loader/Sue Toye beat the Hythe first pair in a deciding 10 point tie-break having been level at 1 set all.
