Herne Bay tennis club had another successful weekend with the qualification of a third team for the Kent League end of Season Divisional Finals. The ladies 1st team played their last match in division 2 at home to Tunbridge Wells 2 knowing that a win would mean promotion and a place in the final. In the 1st round Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs started strongly and soon took a 5-2 lead and then the set 6-4 against the opposition’s 1st pair but their opponents fought back in the second set taking it 2-6. The rubber was decided by a 10 point tie-break which the Bay pair won 10-6. Meanwhile Nicola & Kay Mileham were playing a marathon match against the Tunbridge Wells second pair. They had only just finished their 1st set , a tie-break, which they lost when Tucker & Gibbs finished their whole rubber! After another hour of play they took the 2nd set 7-5 but lost the deciding tie-break 5-10. In the second round Tucker & Gibbs made short work of the opposition;’s second pair dropping just one game and then waited and waited while The Milehams played out another epic rubber against the Tunbridge Wells number one’s. The final score was 6-3, 3-6 12-10 giving the team a 3-1 win and a place in the final away to Canterbury 2 on the 29th March. The mens 1st team played their last match of the season in division 4 at home to Bromley 3 and lost by a set. Both Herne Bay pairs, Martin Beckley/Keith Clark and Graham Miles/Ian Cooke, beat the Bromley 2nd pair and lost to their 1st. Unfortunately Miles & Cooke dropped a set which meant that the match was lost by 5 sets to 4. The team have finished 3rd in division 4 with 2 wins and 2 defeats. The mens veterans team played a depleted Bromley 1st team in division 1 at home and won 3-1. The Bromley team were unable to field a 2nd pair and only wanted to play one rubber. Miles and Cooke lost in straight sets but the match was one by the 3 conceded rubbers. The win was not enough to keep the team in the top division but they look forward to an easier life in division 2 next winter. The ladies over 60’s team played their last match at home against United and won 4-0. Sarah Pout/Kay Mileham only dropped 1 games in their 2 rubbers and Diana High/Mary Gibbon won 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, 4-6, 10 – 8 in the tie-break.
