Herne Bay tennis club members had to battle the elements again this week in order to play their matches. In the Kent league there was an excellent win for mixed 4 in division 7 away to Chipstead Place 2. Dave Lawrence/Sarah Pout won both their rubbers in straight sets and Dave Clements/Vanessa Webb beat the opposition’s 2nd pair giving a 3-1 win overall. This was the second win for the team and they have 3 matches remaining. The ladies 3 team had an extremely close match at home to Trottiscliffe 3 in division 7 but this was not reflected by the final 0-4 scoreline. Despite going to championship tie-breaks in 3 out of their 4 rubbers they were unable to record any wins. The team have won the other 3 matches they have played and with one left to play they are still in with a chance of promotion. The mens veterans team played their second match of the season in divvision 1 at home to Bearsted and won 4-0. Keith Clark/Graham Miles dropped just one game in their 2 rubbers and Martin Beckley/Bob Toye beat the opposition’s 2nd pair 6-2, 6-0 and then had a close 1st set against the number ones. They managed to win that on a tie-break and then went on to take the 2nd set by 6 games to 2. The ladies 1 midweek team played Sevenoaks 1 at home in division 1 in very gusty conditions and lost 1-3. Both Bay pairs went to a championship tie-break against the Sevenoaks number 2’s and Anne Gibbs/Debbie Holden won theirs, and the only rubber, by 10 points to 4. In the Dover & District League the mixed B team won by 5 sets to 3 against St Margaret’s at home in division 2. Lesley Taylor/Bryan Packham drew one set all against the St Margaret’s number ones and beat the number 2’s. Helen Lipyeat, played her 1st match for the Bay with Dave Lawrence and they also beat the opposition’s second pair 6-2, 6-3.
