Herne Bay tennis club has had a successful couple of weeks in both the Kent and Dover & District leagues with wins for men’s 2 and 3, ladies 3 and mixed 1 in the Kent league plus the men’s A and ladies in the D & D league. The men’s 2nd team played their 1st match of the season in division 7 against Bromley CC 3 at home and won by 5 sets to 4. Both the Bay pairs, Bob Toye/Mark Townsend and Guy Farmer/Dave Lawrence, beat Bromley CC’s 2nd pair in straight sets and had very close matches against their 1st pair. Lawrence & Farmer lost in a match tie-break and Toye & Townsend won 7-6, 6-3. The match was a tie on rubbers but the Bay won by 5 sets to 4. The men’s 3 played their 2nd match of the season in division 9 away to Hartley Country Club 4 and were winners by 3 rubbers to 1. Townsend played with Bryan Packham and they won both their rubbers without dropping a set while Lionel Hoskins/Eddie Fisher had a close rubber against the Hartley number ones winning 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 in a match tie-break. The team have made an excellent start with 2 wins out of two matches played. The ladies 3rd team were also playing their 1st match of the summer in division 6 and won 3-1 at home to St John’s, Tunbridge Wells 1. Denise Parrett/Sarah Pout won both their rubbers very easily. In their 1st rubber they came up against another Denise/Sarah pairing – a very unusual situation to play a against a pair with the same names. Bay’s 2nd pair of Christine Hanson/Anja Stileman won their 1st rubber in 3 full sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The ladies 1st team are having a tough season in the top division and lost at home to Bromley 1 by a set. Nicola & Kay Mileham and Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs both beat the Bromley 2nd pair but Tucker and Gibbs dropped a set securing their win and this proved to be decisive in their defeat by 4 sets to 5. The mixed 1st team recorded their 2nd win in division 2, 3-1 at home to Blackheath 2. In the 1st round both Herne Bay pairs, Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs and Graham Miles/Louise Tucker, dropped the 1st set while they adapted to the windy conditions and then came back strongly to take their 2nd sets and match tie-breaks. In the 2nd round Elsden & Gibbs dropped just 3 games beating the opposition’s 2nd pair and hence secured the win by 3 rubbers to 1. The midweek men’s veterans team took on old rivals Margate away in division 1 and were unlucky to lose by 2 games. The Margate 1st pair, containing an ex-Herne Bay player, Keith Clark, were too strong for the Herne Bay team of Graham Miles/Ian Cooke and Jerry Loader/Gary Smith as they only dropped 4 games in their 2 rubbers. Although both Herne Bay pairs beat the Margate second pair they dropped too many games and the match was lost by 30 games to 28.
In the Dover and District league the men’s A team made an excellent start in division 1 with an 8 sets to 0 win at home to Walmer A. The winning team was Graham Miles/Alex Kazakeos and Peter Elsden, making his D & D début, with Jerry Loader. The ladies team also started well when they won 5-3 away to Canterbury. Debbie Holden/Denise Parrett won 3 sets and Anja Stileman/Liz Harvey won 2.
