Herne Bay tennis club teams completed their winter fixtures with 4 matches in the Deal Indoor league. The mens 1 team had an excellent 8 sets to 0 win against Deal ITC 2. The team was Martin Beckley/James Ley and Alex Kazakeos/Mark Kennard. The mens 2 had a much closer final match against St Margaret’s and were unlucky to lose by 5 sets to 4. Dave Lawrence/Gary Smith won both their rubbers 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6 in the tie-break) and 6-4, 6-4 and Bob Toye/Guy Farmer just lost their rubbers 4-6, 6-7 and 6-7, 5-7. The ladies finished with a draw against Deal ITC 1. Nicola & Kay Mileham won their 4 sets with the loss of just 4 games while Sue Toye/Mary Gibbon had a marathon 1st round against the Deal 2nd pair which they eventually lost 6-7, 6-7 after 2 hours. The ladies have won or drawn all their matches and will probably finish the division in 2nd place by one set. The mixed team finished their season in division 1 with a 5 sets to 4 win against Ashford 2. Graham Miles/Anne Gibbs won all their sets and Dave Lawrence/Diana High picked up a set against the Ashford 1st pair to clinch the match. They will also finish the division in second place.
The summer Kent League season is now underway and there was an excellent 3-1 win for Herne Bay ladies 1 at home to Tunbridge Wells 1 in division 1. In the 1st round Bay’s 1st pair, Anne Gibbs/Louise Tucker, started slowly losing the 1st set 4-6 but came back strongly to win the second to love and then take the match tie-break by 10 point to 4. The second pair, Nicola Mileham/Debbie Holden, also started badly losing the 1st set without winning a game but by changing their play and becoming more aggressive they won the second set 6-2 but then just lost the tie-break. The match was poised going into the second round with both sides still able to win and this round proved to be just as close. Gibbs & Tucker narrowly beat the Tunbridge Wells 2nd pair 7-5, 4-6 and 11-9 in the tie-break and Mileham & Holden had an equally close 2nd rubber winning 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. The overall 3-1 result was an excellent start to the new season. The mens 2nd team travelled to DL King Hill to play their 3rd team in division 7 and just lost by 2 sets. Kazakeos/Kennard and Farmer/Lawrence both lost to the Kings Hill 1st pair in straight sets and beat their second pair in 3 sets. The match was tied on rubbers but they lost by 6 sets to 4.
