The summer season is approaching the half-way point at Herne Bay tennis club and there has been no let up in the number of matches played by the teams. In the Kent League mixed 2 had an excellent win away in division 3 against HSBC 1. After the first round the teams were completely level on rubbers, sets and games when the Bay’s first pair of Danielle Miles/Keith Clark narrowly lost 4-6, 6-3, 0-1 and their 2nd pair, Sue Toye/Graham Miles, won 6-3, 2-6, 1-0. The pairs went into the second round knowing that every game was critical and they responded well to the pressure. D Miles and Clark beat the HSBC 2nd pair 6-3, 6-2 and G Miles & Toye lost narrowly to their 1st pair 3-6, 5-7. These scores meant that the team won by 39 games to 37 and gave them their 3rd consecutive win of the season. Ladies 1 were not so lucky in their division 1 match away to Bromley LTC 1 losing out by 4 games. Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs won both their rubbers in straight sets and even managed to pull back a 0-4 deficit against the Bromley 2nd pair to win 9 games in a row and take the rubber 6-4, 6-2. Unfortunately the Bay’s 2nd pair were unable to pick up a set or enough games to gain a win.
In the East Kent league there were excellent wins for both the men’s and ladies 1 teams. The men played Faversham at home in division 1 and won 3-1. The Bay’s 1st pair, Graham Miles/Bob Toye won both their rubbers but were taken to a championship tie-break by the Faversham number ones. The 2nd pair was Lionel Hoskins, who is back to his excellent form having recovered from hip replacement surgery, and Dave Lawrence. They won one rubber in straight sets and were unlucky to lose to the Faversham 1st pair in a championship tie-break. Hoskins’ amazing recovery has been rewarded by a recall to the county over 75’s squad for this summer’s matches. The ladies 1st team had a much closer encounter at home to Hythe winning by 7 games. Louise Tucker/Debbie Holden won both their rubbers dropping just 3 games in each while Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson narrowly lost 5-7, 5-7, in their second rubber but ensured that they had claimed enough games to secure the win.
In the Dover and District league the ladies team travelled to Hythe to play their A team and won by 5 sets to 3. Anja Stileman/Vanessa Webb beat the Hythe 2nd pair and drew against their 1sts and Mary Haldin/Lizzie Harvey drew against both pairs. The set won 7-5 by Haldin & Harvey against the Hythe 1st pair clinched the match for the team. The team have had 2 wins and a draw so far this season – an excellent start. Both mixed team were up against Canterbury opposition this week in division 2. The A team played their B team at home and won 5-3. Graham & Danielle Miles beat both Canterbury pairs and Ian Cooke/Sarah Pout picked up the winning set against their 2nd pair. The B team were matched against Canterbury’s C team and they were very pleased to achieve a 4 sets all draw. Gary Smith/Helen Lipyeat and Bryan Packham/Judy Wright both won 2 sets each. This was Wright’s first match in a mixed team and she played very well helping the team to their draw.
