The end of the Kent League season is fast approaching and Herne Bay tennis club teams have been playing matches crucial to winning the leagues or avoiding relegation. The midweek ladies 1 team had 2 matches left to play in division 1 and they knew if they won them both they would be champions. In the 1st match they played Bearsted 1 at home and although both rubbers against the opposition’s 1st pair went to deciding tie-breaks they won the match 4-0. Going into the last match, at home to DL King’s Hill, they only needed a win to clinch the title and they achieved that with another 4-0 win. The team for both matches was Kay Mileham/Anne Gibbs and Sarah Pout/Sue Toye. The ladies 2nd team played DL Dartford at home in division 2 knowing that a win would put them in contention to win the division. They won the match 3-1 with Debbie Holden/Caroline Packer winning 2 rubbers and Danielle Miles/Sue Toye winning one. The result put them in 2nd place in the division with just the league leaders, Tunbridge Wells 2, to play. Unfortunately in this crucial match Tunbridge Wells proved too strong and the ladies 2 team will remain in the same division next summer. Mens 2 played Maidstone 2 away in division 7 and were unlucky to lose a close match by 5 sets to 4. Jerry Loader/James Ley won both their rubbers. The team have played 4 matches 3 of which have been drawn 2 -2 on rubbers but they have only won one of them. They need a win in their last match against the bottom team to ensure their survival in a division that they have shown themselves capable of competing in. The Bay’s mixed 1st team played a very close game against local rivals Margate at home in division 2. In the 1st round the extremely windy conditions didn’t seem to affect the Margate 1st pair and they swiftly took the 1st set to love against the Bay pairing of Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs. The Bay pair recovered to take the 2nd set to 4 but lost the tie-break. Meanwhile Martin Beckley/Louise Tucker also lost their 1st set against the Margate 2nd pair but went on to win the rubber 7-6, 1-0. In the 2nd round Elsden & Gibbs mastered the blustery conditions and took advantage of the Margate 2nd pair’s increasing frustration to beat them 6-0, 6-0. Beckley & Tucker also took the 1st set in their 2nd round match but then dropped the 2nd set and the tie-break. The match ended as a 2-2 draw on rubbers but the Bay won 6-5 on sets. The team have won their 1st 2 matches with 2 still to play. The midweek mixed veterans team played only their 2nd match of the season away to Broadstairs and won 3-1. In the 1st round Ian Cooke/Nicola Mileham won their rubber 6-2, 6-1 but Keith Clark/Kay Mileham lost 2-6, 4-6. With the match level after the 1st round Cooke & Nicola Mileham won a close 1st set and then closed out the 2nd set, the rubber and the match 6-0. Clark & Kay Mileham took the 1st set against the Broadstairs second pair, lost the 2nd and then won the 10 point tie-break resulting in a 3-1 win for Herne Bay.
The Dover and District league is also drawing to a close and mens A played Knoll B both home and away in division 1. At home they drew 4 sets all and away they lost 3 sets to 5. The team for both matches was Graham Miles/Alex Kazakeos and Martin Beckley/Jerry Loader and with 2 matches remaining they have won 3, drawn 1 and lost 2. The mens B team finished off their best season in division 4 with their 3rd win in succession. They beat Walmer B at home by 5 sets to 3. James Ley/Matt Hoffmeister played superbly to win all their sets and Bob Toye/Gary Smith chipped in with one set to secure the win. The ladies team played Knoll B at home and won 6-2. Vanessa Webb/Pauline Pierce won all 4 of their sets and Mary Haldin/Liz Harvey won 2. Mixed A continued their unbeaten form with 2 wins a t home in division 2. In the 1st match against Sandwich they were playing on the same very windy night as the KL mixed 1 team but the team, Nicola Mileham/Eddie Fisher and Sue Toye/Ian Cooke, didn’t have any problems as they won by 8 sets to nil. Their 2nd match was against Canterbury C and the good form continued with a 6-2 win for the team. In this match Cooke and Mileham played together and Fisher partnered Debbie Holden. The team have 2 matches remaining both against Hythe A. The mixed B team also played 2 matches in division 3. The 1st was away to Bridge B and in pouring rain they managed to draw 4 sets all. The team, Gary Smith/Helen Lipyeat and Bryan Packham/Lesley Taylor, thoroughly enjoyed the match despite looking like drowned rats by the end. They then played Walmer B away and lost by 3 sets to 5. Matt Hoffmeister replaced Packham in this team.
