Herne Bay tennis club are now in full swing for the summer season. There were matches for teams in both the weekend and weekday leagues and even one winter final that was delayed by bad weather. During the week the mixed veterans team started the defence of their Kent league title with a 4-0 win over LA Fitness from Maidstone. The team were on top form and only allowed the opposition 10 games over the 8 sets. The team was Sarah Pout/Keith Clark and Anne Gibbs/Brian Cooper. In the weekend matches in the Kent League the mixed 2nd team played Bexley 2 in division 3 at home and won 3-1. Martin Beckley and Gill Dickey were a new partnership for the team and they won one rubber and lost their other in a tie-break. Graham Miles and Louise Tucker won both their rubbers. The depleted ladies 3rd team travelled to play Beckenham 3rds in division 7 with only one pair due to holiday and injury problems. They managed to win one rubber and also prevented the team from automatic relegation. The noble pair were Diana High and Denise Parrett.

In the East Kent league the mens 1st and 3rd team had matches and both were unlucky to lose by a set in 2 very close games. The mens1st team match was in division 1 away to Broadstairs 1 and both Bay pairs lost to the very strong, young Broadstairs pairing and beat their 2nd pair. Unfortunatlely Bay’s first pair dropped a set while beating the opposition’s second pair and this was critical for the match result. The teams were level on rubbers but Broadstairs won by 5 sets to 4. In the mens 3rd match against Margate 3 at home a similar situation also happened. This time the teams were again level 2-2 on rubbers but the sets score was 6-5 to Margate. Bob Toye and Dave Lawrence won both their rubbers in tie-breaks and the match was decided by a tie-break which went in Margate’s favour.

The ladies 1st team played their Kent league division 1 Winter final with a depleted team during the week and lost 3-1 away to Tunbridge Wells 1. Sally Holmes and Gill Dickey winning the one rubber.

Herne Bay players were well represented and very successful in the KM finals held at Beartsed on Sunday. Sally Holmes won 3 titles 2 in the veterans competitions and one in the main draw – a feat that had not been accomplished before. In the main draw she partnered Dominic Wood in the mixed competition and they beat Giles Davey and Faye Tagg from Tunbridge Wells 7-5, 7-5. She then paired up with Anne Gibbs to win both the ladies doubles and the ladies veteran doubles titles. The pair defeated Theresa Flay and Julie Plamer of Maidstone 6-1, 6-3 and Jane Gentle and Jane Humphrey also of Maidstone 6-1, 6-4. Keith Clark won the over 45 singles title when he defeated Steve Wright of Gillingham 6-1, 6-2.
