Matches played by Herne Bay tennis club members over the last week were critical for several of their Kent League teams either to secure their promotion from a division or to ensure their survival in their current division. Mixed 2 played away at Blackheath against their 2nd team in division 2 knowing that they only needed to complete the fixture to ensure their promotion to division 2 for next summer. They did more than that by winning the match 3-1 and remaining undefeated in all their league matches. The win was achieved without 2 members of the usual team who were both injured. Keith Clark/Sue Toye won both their rubbers – one in straight sets and the other 10 points to 6 in a deciding match tie-break. Sarah Pout/James Ley beat the opposition’s second pair. The team will now play a divisional final away to LA Fitness 1 in September. Ladies 2 also achieved promotion to division 2 without hitting a ball! They had already completed all their fixtures and were lying in second place with 4 wins and 1 defeat. The team in pole position lost thier last match 3-1 and this was enough to allow our ladies 2 to take top place by one rubber. Their divisional final will be at home to Chipstead Place1 in September. The ladies 1st team played their last match of the season in division 1 away to Beckenham 2 knowing that they needed a win to maintain their place in the top division for next summer. The team played superbly and won 3-1. Their 1st pair of Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs won both their rubbers in straight sets while the 2nd pair, Nicola Mileham/Debbie Holden, had 2 marathon rubbers which both went to deciding match tie-breaks. They lost 6-10 to the 2nd pair but won 15-13 against the 1st pair. The team were delighted with the result and the prospect of continuing in the 1st division next summer. Mixed 3 were unlucky to lose by a set away to Trottiscliffe 1 in division 6. Both pairs, Jerry Loader/Sarah Pout and Eddie Fisher/Debbie Holden, beat the opposition’s 2nd pair and lost to their strong 1st pair, Unfortunately a set was dropped by Fisher & Holden when they won their rubber. This was the team’s 1st defeat and they can still win promotion if they beat the league leaders in their last match of the season. Mixed 4 played away at Parklangley against their 2nd team in division 7 and lost 1-3. Dave Clements/Vanessa Webb won the rubber. The team is currently in second place in the division with one match remaining. They cannot catch the league leaders but are safe in 2nd place. In the midweek league the mixed veterans played their 2nd match of the season at home to LA Fitness and won 4-0. The team was Keith Clark/Debbie Holden and Bryan Packham/Anne Gibbs. Finally, mens B had their 1st win of the season in division 4 of the Dover & District league at the 7th attempt! They were at home to Bridge and won by 5 sets to 3. The team was Graham Miles/Bob Toye who won 3 sets and Dave Lawrence/Bryan Packham who won 2. The team have one match left and hope to build on this success with another win and finish the season on a high note.
