The Winter Kent League season is now underway for Herne Bay tennis club. The men’s 1st team started their season with an excellent 4-0 win away to Bromley Cricket Club 2 in division 4. Graham Miles and Ian Cooke beat the opposition 1st pair in a match tie-break and then went on to beat their 2nd pair with the loss of just 2 games. Bay’s 2nd pair, Martin Beckley/Jerry Loader, had similar results starting with an easy win against the Bromley CC number 2’s and then coming back from a dropped set against the 1st pair to win 6-0, 1-0 in a match tie-break. Men’s 3 played David Lloyd King’s Hill away in division 10 and lost although everyone played well the opposition were just too strong. Ladies 2 have had 2 matches and won one and lost one. In their 1st match of the season in division 4 they played away at Gravesham 1 and lost 1-3. Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson won the rubber for Herne Bay in a match tie-break. The 2nd match was at home to Hayes 1 and they won a very close match on games. In the 1st round both pairs went to 3 sets with Danielle Miles/Sue Toye winning 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 and Debbie Holden/Vanessa Webb losing 6-3, 4-6, 3-6. The Bay team went into the 2nd round leading by 6 games. Miles & Toye started badly but recovered from a 1-4 deficit to win 6-4, 6-0 while Holden & Webb had a very close game against the Hayes number ones just losing out 3-6, 6-7. The match was tied on rubbers and sets but Herne Bay won by 51 games to 41. Mixed 2 had an impressive 4-0 win at home to Beckenham 3 in division 4. Danielle & Graham Miles dropped just 3 games in their 2 rubbers and Debbie Holden/Keith Clark also won all their rubbers in straight sets. Mixed 3 had a very close match away to Hayes 2 in division but lost 1-3. Sarah Pout/Jerry Loader lost their 1st rubber to the 1st pair while they adjusted to the fast astroturf courts but then took their 2nd rubber 6-4, 6-1. Bay’s 2nd pair was the new pairing of Debbie Holden and Chris Lambeth and they were unlucky to lose both their rubbers in match tie-breaks.
