Herne Bay tennis club has made a slow start to the Kent league winter season with only a few matches played in the first month. The ladies 2 team had a excellent 3-1 win away against David Lloyd Dartford 1 in division 3. In the 1st round Bay’s 1st pair, Sue Toye/Debbie Holden struggled on the fast astroturf courts and lost but Sarah Pout/Caroline Packer came back well after a slow start. They were 2-5 down in the first set against the second pair and fought back to win it in a tie-break in which they were also 5-2 down. They won the 2nd set 6-3. In the 2nd round Toye & Holden started to get used to the surface and beat the opposition’s 1st pair 3-6, 6-3 and 10 – 7 in a deciding tie-break. Pout & Packer lost their 1st set on a tie-break, came back from 2-5 down in the 2nd to take that on a tie-break and then won the championship tie-break. The ladies 3 team had a much more straight forward 3-1 win in their match away to Shooters Hill 1 in division 7. Vanessa Webb/Denise Parrett won both their rubbers and only dropped 1 game and Christine Hanson/Anja Stileman won one rubber against the opposition’s second pair in a deciding tie-break. The Deal Indoor League also got underway in October with a match for the mixed team. It was a very close encounter against Knoll Ashford which was tied 2 all on rubbers but Knoll took by 5 sets to 4. Both Herne Bay pairs, Graham Miles/Caroline Packer and Jerry Loader/Sue Toye, beat the Knoll second pair and lost to their strong 1st pair. Unfortunatley Loader & Toye dropped a set in their win and this set proved to be decisive allowing Knoll to win the match by one set.
