The weather has played havoc with tennis fixtures at Herne Bay tennis club over the last few weeks. The club has had to contend with non-stop rain and even a hurricane and the winter hasn’t even started yet. Luckily club members have had the newly established Deal Indoor league to fall back on and have managed to keep on playing competitive tennis. The club entered teams in the mens, ladies and mixed leagues. Men’s 2 started the season with a 5 sets to 3 win for the Bay against Deal ITC 2 in division 2. Bryan Packham/Dave Lawrence won 2 sets and Gary Smith/Dave Clemence won 3. In their other 3 matches mens 2 recorded 2 draws and one defeat and now wait to see whether they will be promoted for the second half of the season. The squad included the 4 players from the 1st match plus Bob Toye and Guy Farmer. The men’s 1st team have had 3 close matches but just lost by a set on each occasion. The ladies have only had one match against Ashford which they won 6-2. The team was Sarah Pout/Kay Mileham, who won all their sets, and Debbie Holden/Diana High who won 2 sets. Finally the mixed team have played twice and drawn both 4 sets all. The team was Graham Miles/Anne Gibbs and Dave Lawrence/Diana High against Ashford 2 and Martin Beckley replaced Miles against Hythe.
There have been some outdoor matches in the Kent league and the ladies teams are undefeated so far. Ladies 1 played on 2 consecutive rain-free weekends in division 2 and won both. At home to Bromley CC 1 they won, with a team weakened by injury, by a set. Their first pair of Lousie Tucker/Anne Gibbs won both their rubbers dropping just 2 games in each. Their second pair, Debbie Holden/Vanessa Webb, battled hard to take a set off the opposition 2nd pair and just lost in a second set tie-break to their 1st pair. In their other match they travelled to Hythe to play their 1st team and won 4-0. The team for this match was Tucker/Gibbs and Nicola & Kay Mileham. The ladies 2nd team played their 1st match away to Bromley LTC 3 in division 3 and won by 5 sets to 4. Kay Mileham/Sarah Pout and Debbie Holden/Caroline Packer both beat the Bromley 2nd pair and lost to the 1sts. Holden and Packer managed to take the match winning 2nd set off the strong 1st pair on a tie-break after losing the first set to love. Ladies 3 have also played twice in division 8. Their 1st match was away to Parklangley and the team of Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson and Denise Parrett/Vanessa Webb won easily 4-0. For their 2nd match the same team members were away at Sydenham. Unfortunatley the team had a puncture on the way to the match and arrived 35mins late. Luckily the Sydenham team was very understanding and agreed to play the match without taking any sets but they did set a time limit by which play would have to stop. The Bay ladies won both rubbers in the 1st round and were up in 2nd round when play had to stop. The team hence won by 2 rubber to nil. Mixed 2 have also had 2 matches and won one and just lost the other. Their 1st match was at home to Tunbridge Wells 3 in division 4. Danielle Miles played her last match before having a lump removed from behind her knee with Keith Clark and the second pair was Graham Miles/Caroline Packer. The match was incredibly close with every rubber being decided by a champions tie-break. Both Bay pairs beat the Tunbridge Wells second pair and lost to their 1sts. The match was tied on rubbers and sets and Tunbridge Wells just won by 3 games. The team played again at Sevenoaks against their 3rd team and won 3-1. Nicola Mileham/Keith Clark won both their rubbers and Graham Miles/Debbie Holden won one. The team wish Danielle a speedy recovery and hope to welcome her back in the New Year.
