At last some good weather has arrived and Herne Bay tennis club have made excellent use of it playing matches in 3 different leagues. In the Kent League the ladies 1st and 2nd teams and the men’s 1st and 3rd all had matches. Ladies 1 played their first match of the season in division 1 and won 3-1 at home to Tunbridge Wells 1. Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs played very well from the start of their 1st rubber and beat the opposition’s number ones 6-2, 6-4. Meanwhile Kay and Nicola Mileham were in a closely fought battle against the Tunbridge Wells second pairing and eventually won 7-4, 6-4. In the second round Tucker & Gibbs took a few games to get into their stride after the long wait but eventually won 6-3, 6-0. The Mileham’s had a good games against the opposition’s 1st pair but lost 3 and 2. The ladies 2nd team played 2 matches in division 3 over the last week, winning one and losing one both by a score of 3 rubbers to 1. The won at home against Knoll Orpington 1 with Sue Toye/Danielle Miles winning both rubbers. Their 1st round match was very close and was eventually decided by a match tie-break and then they went on to beat the Knoll 2nd pair very easily 6-0, 6-0. The Bay’s second pair, Sarah Pout/Debbie Holden, also had a comfortable win against the Knoll 2nd pair. Their other match was away to Broadstairs 1 in which the same players lost 1-3 , Miles & Toye picking up the only rubber. In the men’s divisions Herne Bay’s 1st team played Margate 2 at home in division 2 and won 4-0. The match involved Herne Bay winning 3 match tie-breaks and a second set tie-break so was much closer than appears from the score line. The successful team members were Peter Elsden/Graham Miles and Martin Beckley/Keith Clark. Men’s 3 played their 2nd match of the summer in division 9 at home to Bromley Wendover 5 and won 4-0. The winning team was Bob Toye/Gary Smith and Eddie Fisher/Jerry Loader and they only dropped 9 games in 8 sets.
In the Kent League midweek matches there was a 5 sets to 4 win for the men’s veterans team and a 3 games loss for the ladies 2nd team. The men’s match was away to Blackheath and very close. It could have gone either way. Martin Beckley/Bob Toye won their close 1st round match 7-6, 6-4 while Keith Clark/Ian Cooke were well off the pace struggling on the unfamiliar artificial clay surface and lost in straight sets. In the 2nd round Clark & Cooke showed their true form winning 6-1, 6-2 and Beckley & Toye fought hard to eventually lose in a match tie-break but they had clinched the match winning set. Herne Bay ladies 2 had to travel to Bearsted to play their 2nd team in division 3 with just one pair due to illness on the day. The 2 heroic ladies, Christine Hanson/Debbie Holden, tried their best to achieve a draw but failed by just 3 games. Finally there was one match at home in the East Kent league for the men’s team against Margate 2 and they won by 6 sets to 4. Mark Kennard/Bob Toye won both their rubbers in straight sets with their consistent aggressive play and James Ley/Lionel Hoskins contributed 2 sets when they were unlucky to lose both their rubbers in match tie-breaks.
