Herne Bay tennis club had a very good week with lots of matches being played and teams winning easily. In the Kent league both the mixed 1st and 2nd teams won 4-0 away from home. The 1st team played Sydenham 1 in division 1 and both pairs completed their rubbers without dropping a set. The team was Anne Gibbs/Peter Elsden and Sally homes/Dominic Wood. It was the team’s 4th win and they have 1 match left to play and win in order to reach the divisional final. The 2nd team played at Bromley Wendover against their 1st team and again did not drop any sets. The team for this match in division 3 was Gill Dickey/Martin Beckley and Louise Tucker/Graham Miles. The team were very grateful to Miles for standing in at the last minute when Keith Clark was unable to play because of county commitments. The ladies 3 team also played away in division 6 at Maidstone and again won 4-0. The team for this match was Denise Parrett/Diana High and Sue Toye/Christina Bell. There was one match in the midweek league when the mixed veterans team completed their fixtures with another 4-0 win at home to Chipstead Place and ended their 11th consecutive season as the unbeaten champions of this league. The team was Keith Clark/Sarah Pout and Brian Cooper/Anne Gibbs. Pout and Clark won both their rubbers very easily while Cooper and Gibbs made hard work of beating the opposition’s 1st pair 2-6, 7-6, 12-10 in a championship tie-break.

In the East Kent league the mens 2nd team travelled to Gore Court, Sittingbourne, to play on grass against their 1st team in division 3. The team coped well with the new surface and won 3-1. Alex Kazakeos/Ben Clacy won both their rubbers and Dave Lawrence/Jerry Loader won one. In the Dover & District league there was a win for the Mens A team away to Walmer C but both the Mens B and mixed B teams lost to Sandwich and St Margaret’s, respectively. The men in the A team were Alex Kazakeos/Peter Grimwood and Martin Beckley/Brian Cooper and in a close match they won by 5 sets to 3. Cooper and Beckley managed to win all 4 of their sets and Kazakeos & Grimwood did very well to win 1 set against Walmer’s 1st pair having lost 7-5, 7-5 to their 2nds. The A team have 1 match left to play out of their 8 and have only lost once and they are optimistic that they will win promotion to division 2 next season.
