An improvement in the weather has meant that Herne Bay tennis club have managed to play all their scheduled matches in the Kent League over the last 2 weeks. The mens 1st team travelled to Sevenoaks to play their 2nd team in division 4 and won 4-0. Martin Beckley/Graham Miles had a close game against the Sevenoaks 1st pair eventually winning 7-6, 4-6 and 1-0 in a deciding tie-break while the second pair of Peter Elsden/Ian Cooke beat the Sevenoaks second pair very easily with the loss of one game. In the second round both pairs won in straight sets to take the match 4-0 and record their 2nd win of the season. They have one match left to play. The ladies 2nd team had a very good win at home in division 3 against the league leaders, David Lloyd Beckenham. Their 1st pair, Debbie Holden/Caroline Packer, won both their rubbers in straight sets and the 2nd pair, Sue Toye/Kay Mileham, took a set off their 2nd pair. The score was tied at 2 rubbers all but Herne Bay won by 5 sets to 4 and finish their season with 2 wins and 2 defeats and will remain in division 3 for next winter. The ladies veterans 1st team travelled to Bromley CC to paly their 1st team in division 2 and won 3-1. Nicola and Kay Mileham won both their rubbers and Anne GIbbs/Sue Toye won one. The team are unbeaten with one match left to play. Finally there was an excellent win for the ladies over 60’s team when they beat Blackheath at home by 2 games. Both Herne Bay pairs, Sarah Pout/Kay Mileham and Diana High/Mary Gibbon, beat the Blackheath 2nd pair and lost to their strong 1st pair. The match was level on both rubbers and sets but Bay triumphed by 33 games to 31. The team have won 2 matches and lost one and have one left to play.
