Teams at Herne Bay tennis club have been busy playing their final matches in the Kent league over the last couple of weeks. Ladies 1 travelled to Canterbury to play their 1st team in division 1 in their penultimate match of the season. The match proved to be very close with Canterbury winning by one set. Debbie Holden/Sarah Pout won both their rubbers but dropped a set against the opposition’s first pair. The team won 2 of their 5 matches and will remain in division 3 next summer. Ladies’ 3 final match of the season was away to David Lloyd Kingshill 3 in division 7 but due to illness they were only able to send one pair and lost 1-3. Vanessa Webb/Diana High beat the Kings Hill 2nd pair. The team also won 2 matches and will retain their place in division 7. Mixed 1 will have an anxious wait for other teams in division 1 to complete their remaining fixtures to see if they will stay in the top division. They completed their final 2 matches with 2 defeats and only won 1 match this season. Their final match was at home to Bexley 1 and they were unlucky to lose be one set. Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs won both their rubbers but dropped a set in doing so, which proved crucial when their 2nd pair lost both rubbers in straight sets. There was some success for Herne Bay ladies teams in the Kent midweek leagues. Both ladies 1 and 2 won matches at home in division 1 and 3 respectively. Ladies 1 played Sevenoaks 1 at home and won 3-1. Sarah Pout/Anne Gibbs won both their rubbers and Sue Toye/Debbie Holden won one. The team have won 2 out of 3 matches with 2 remaining. The team won by 5 sets to 4 and 35 games to 33 – a very close match.
In the East Kent league the men’s 2nd team had a good win at home in division 2 against Deal Indoor by 3 rubbers to 1. Deal Indoor had struggled to find a 4th player and had to forfeit a set when he arrived late so Alex Kazakeos/Dan Walker won 6-0 6-0 and 7-5, 6-4. Bay’s 2nd pair, Andy Irving/Steve Howard, had a much more testing afternoon when they lost their first rubber in 3 sets (3-6, 6-3, 3-6) and then won their second also in 3 sets 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
In the Dover and District league there have been a lot of matches postponed due to rain but men’s A did manage to play Hythe B at home in division 2 and drew 4 sets all. Graham Miles/Gary Smith won 3 sets and Bryan Packham/Martin Beckley won 1. The rain has played havoc with the Dover and District league and most Herne Bay teams still have half their fixtures left to play.
