Despite some awful weather of late Herne Bay LTC have completed a number of fixtures in the Kent Leagues.

The Ladies 1st team played their much delayed replay of the Kent League Summer 2018 Division 2 final at Herne Bay against Bromley LTC 1. The first match had ended in a draw on rubbers, sets and games. In the 1st round the Bromley 1st pair were too strong for the Bay pairing of Anne Gibbs/Louise Tucker and they won in straight sets. The Bay’s second pair of Nicola Mileham/Sue Toye had a marathon match which lasted over 2 hours against the opposition’s 2nd pair. They eventually lost 6-3, 3-6 and 6-10 in the deciding tie break. In the 2nd round Tucker & Gibbs also went to 3 sets against the 2nd pair but managed to win 3-6, 7-5 and then 10-6in the tie break. The Bromley 1st pair beat Mileham & Toye winning the match and the division 2 title 3-1.

Herne Bay ladies 2nd match of the weekend was also at home but this time it was a winter league Division 1 match against Sevenoaks 1. The same 4 players were in action again for Herne Bay. In the 1st round Gibbs & Tucker had a close match against the Sevenoaks 1st pair with their attacking style causing the opposition to over hit. They won 6-4, 2-6 and then had another successful tie break which they took 10-4. They then went on to beat the opposition’s 2nd pair 6-4, 6-2. Mileham & Toye played well in both their rubbers but were unable to win a set so Herne Bay drew the match on rubbers but lost it by a set.

Herne Bay Men’s 2 got off to a great start in Division 6A recording a fine win away at Hayes. The opening rubbers were close affairs with Ian Cooke/Dan Walker edging a 1st set tie break before taking the 2nd set 4-6 and Bay’s 2nd pair David Mikhail/Colin Thompson producing identical scores to win 6-7,4-6. Mikhail/Thompson fell short against Hayes 1st pair but Cooke/Walker wrapped the match up with a dominant display beating the host’s 2nd pair 1-6, 1-6 to win the match 3-1.

The Mixed 1 team welcomed near neighbours Canterbury 2 to Beacon Road in Division 2A and did just enough in a hard fought but entertaining encounter. Bay’s 1st pair Louise Tucker/Peter Elsden took their 1st rubber in 2 close sets 6-4, 6-4 whilst Bay’s other pair Anne Gibbs/Graham Miles struggled for consistency going down in straight sets. With the tie in the balance Gibbs/Miles produced a battling performance before losing out in 3 hard fought sets against the oppositions 1st pair. Tucker/Elsden had little trouble in the remaining rubber losing just the 1 game. With the match tied 2-2 in rubbers, Bay took the points 5-4 in sets.

The Mixed 3 team produced an excellent result 4-0 away to Bearsted 3 in Division 7B with all the rubbers being won in straight sets. With new pairings Sue Toye/David Mikhail winning theirs 2-6, 3-6 and 1-6 5-7, Debbie Holden/Mark Kennard formed a formidable partnership to drop just 5 games over their 2 rubbers.
