Herne Bay tennis club have had mixed success over the last few weeks with both Kent League matches and the rain. The bad weather prevented some matches being played and made playing conditions very difficult in others. Mens 2 had a very comfortable win in division 9 at home to Frindsbury 4 by 4 rubbers to nil. It was the 1st match for new pairing Alex Kazakeos/Chris Lambeth and they were off to a good start winning both rubbers in straight sets and only dropping 8 games. The Bay’s other pair, Jerry Loader/Eddie Fisher, were even more dominant dropping just 5 games. Mens 3 also had an easy win in division 10 away to Martin Dene. The team was Bob Toye/Gary Smith and Dave Lawrence/Bryan Packham and they lost just 6 games in 8 sets. Ladies 1 are finding life back in the top division hard work and have yet to win a match in 2 starts. They lost 1-3 at home to Bromley LTC 1 and then by a set away to Sundridge Park 1. The team for both matches was Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs and Kay and Nicola Mileham. Tucker & Gibbs won the rubber against Bromley and both pairs beat Sundridge Park 2nd pair but unfortunately the Mileham’s dropped a set in their win and that meant that the team lost 4-5 on sets having been level on rubbers. Ladies 2 had a good 3-1 win in division 4 at home to Chipstead Place 1. Herne Bay’s 1st pair of Sue Toye/Danielle Miles beat the Chipstead 1st pair 7-5, 6-1 and their 2nd pair 6-3, 6-2 and Debbie Holden/Sarah Pout won 6-4, 6-2 against the opposition’s 2nd pair. The team have won 2 matches and lost 1 with 1 left to play. Ladies 3 had a very close game in division 7 away to Blackheath 4 and came out the winners by 1 game. In the 1st round Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson beat the Blackheath 1st pair 7-6, 6-2 after taking a set to get used to the artificial clay courts and Bay’s 2nd pair, Anja Stileman/Diana High, lost 5-7, 0-6. This meant that Blackheath led by 3 games going into the second round. Pout & Hanson quickly dispensed with the Blackheath 2nd pair dropping just one game and Stileman/High took 5 games from their 1st pair to secure the win by 35 games to 34. The mixed teams have been having varied success with some wins and some defeats. Mixed 1 travelled to Sevenoaks to play their 1st team in division 1 and although 3 of the 4 rubbers went to 3rd set match tie-breaks the team lost 0-4. In their 2nd match of the winter they played Walmer 1 indoors at Deal ITC and again lost 0-4 but only one rubber went to a tie-break this time. Mixed 2 were much more successful with a 3-1 win at home to Canterbury 3 in division 4. The match was started in drizzle and finished in persistent rain. Danielle Miles/Keith Clark won both their rubbers, the 1st in a match tie-break, and Jerry Loader/Debbie Holden beat the Canterbury 2nd pair in a match tie-break. Mixed 3 played Broadstairs 1, division 6, at home in very windy conditions and won 3-1. Debbie Holden/Chris Lambeth won both their rubbers, one 7-5 in the 3rd set and the other in straight sets. Sarah Pout/Jerry Loader also went to 3 sets in their 1st round rubber having led 6-2, 4-2 they finally closed the rubber out 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. Mixed 4 lost 1-3 away to Beckenham 4 in division 7 with Dave Clemence and Vanessa Webb winning the Herne Bay rubber. Finally the mens veterans team played Park Langley 2 at home in division 1 and in a bizarre match won 3-1. In the 1st round Keith Clark/Martin Beckley were level at 4 all in the 1st set when one of the opposition’s players fell over and was unable to continue playing giving the current rubber to Herne Bay 6-4, 6-0 and conceding their second rubber. Bay’s second pair, Graham Miles/Ian Cooke, continued with their rubber from 4-5 in the 1st set after a long interruption and Miles promptly lost his serve and the set. Towards the end of the 2nd set with Miles serving, this time to win it, he hurt his knee and was unable to continue – another concession. The 2 fit pairs then played each other in the 2nd round with Clark & Beckley winning 6-4, 6-3.
