The last 2 weeks have been very successful for Herne Bay tennis Club’s teams in the Kent and Deal Indoor leagues. The ladies 1st team played 2 matches in division 1 and won them both. In the 1st match they travelled to Sevenoaks to play their 2nd team and started the match with snow falling on them. The 1st round ended up level on rubbers when the Bay’s 1st pair, Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs, won 6-3, 6-2 and their 2nd pair, Danielle Miles/Debbie Holden, just failed to win a set and lost 3-6, 5-7. Herne Bay took a narrow lead of 2 games into the 2nd round. Tucker and Gibbs dropped just 4 games against the Sevenoaks 2nd pair and Miles & Holden managed to take 3 games from their opposition. The match was won by just one game and the sun had come out by the end. In their 2nd match at home to Blackheath, 1 Nicola Mileham replaced Holden, the team won 3-1. Tucker & Gibbs lost 8-10 in a deciding tie-break to the Blackheath number one pair and then beat their 2nd pair 6-4, 6-3 while Miles & Mileham won both their rubbers in straight sets to secure an excellent win against the team who were in second place in the division. In the veterans leagues the mens veterans team beat Sevenoaks 1 at home in division 2 by 3 rubbers to 1. Graham Miles/Ian Cooke won both their rubbers and Jerry Loader/Eddie Fisher picked up one. The team have played 2 matches so far and are unbeaten and top of the division. Ladies vets 1 had an easy 4-0 win at home to David Lloyd Dartford in division 1 when the opposition could only manage to send one pair to Herne Bay. Nicola Mileham/Anne Gibbs beat that pair, 6-1, 6-1 and Sue Toye/Debbie Holden won 6-1, 6-4. The team is currently unbeaten after 2 matches and top of the division. Ladies 3 lost 1-3 to Trottiscliffe 2 in division 7, Denise Parrett/Vanessa Webb winning the rubber in a deciding tie-break. Mixed 3 were unlucky to lose 1-3 away to Maidstone 2 in division 7 who had a very strong 1st pair. Bryan Packham/Lesley Taylor won one rubber in a deciding tie-break and James Ley/Helen Lipyeat just lost in a 3rd set tie-break. There were also 2 good wins for Herne Bay teams in the DITL. The ladies team beat DITC 2 by 8 sets to 1 and the mixed team, also playing a Deal side, won 6-2. In the ladies match Debbie Holden/Anne Gibbs won both their rubbers only dropping 6 games and Sarah Pout/Caroline Packer beat the opposition’s 2nd pair in a 10 point 3rd set tie-break and then cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win against their 1st pair. Graham Miles/Anne Gibbs played 1st pair in the mixed match against DITC and won both their rubbers, 6-1, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-2 and Jerry Loader/Caroline Packer beat the 2nd pair 6-1, 6-1.
