Herne Bay tennis Club’s mixed 1st team made an excellent start to the summer season in Kent League division 2 with a 4-0 win at home to Tunbridge Wells 3. Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs won both their rubbers dropping just 7 games. The 2nd pair, Martin Beckley/Sue Toye, beat the opposition’s second pair 7-5, 6-2 and their 1sts in a match tie-break. The ladies 1 midweek team also had a battling win in division 1 away to Trottiscliffe 1. The Bay’s 1st pair, Sarah Pout/Kay Mileham, came back from being 5-2 down in the first set to take it in the tie-break. Although most games in the second set went to deuce they lost that set to love and also went on to lose a close match tie-break 7-10. Meanwhile the 2nd pair, Debbie Holden/Sue Toye, beat their opposite number 6-2, 6-2. In the second round both 1st pairs won 6-2, 6-1 which meant that the match was tied at 2 rubbers all but the Bay won by 5 sets to 4. This was a welcome 1st win for the team. The midweek mens veterans team also had an away match during the week when they travelled to Chipstead. After a slow start the team eventually came out winners by 3 rubbers to 1. Martin Beckley/Jerry Loader dropped the 1st set to the Chipstead 1st pair but recovered to win 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 but Ian Cooke/Bob Toye lost to the home team’s 2nd pair 3-6, 4-6. Both Herne Bay pairs played much better in the second round and both won their rubbers easily to win the match 3-1. The team have played 3 matches so far and dropped just one rubber. Rain affected matches played in the Dover and District league this week with mens A completing just one round against Knoll A away in division 1. Beckley/Loader drew one set all against the Knoll 1st pair, 7-5, 2-6 and Graham Miles/Alex Kazakeos beat the 2nd pair 6-1, 6-3. It was impossible to play the 2nd round so the teams agreed to half the remaining rubbers giving Herne Bay a 5 set to 3 win. Mens B also played in the rain at home to Bridge in division 4 but lost 3-5. Gary Smith/Dave Lawrence beat the opposition’s second pair 6-3, 7-5 and Bob Toye/James Ley drew against them 6-2, 5-7.
