28th Jan. 14

The ladies at Herne Bay tennis club have made an excellent start to 2014. The ladies 3 team completed their last Kent League match in division 8 with another 4-0 win at home against St John’s 2. It was their 4th win in a row in which they had not dropped a rubber. The team for all matches was Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson and Vanessa Webb/Denise Parrett. The team can now look forward to the divisional final at the end of March and playing in division 7 next winter. The ladies veterans 2 team have been just as successful. They have played twice since Christmas in division 4 and have yet to drop a rubber. Their two 4-0 wins were both at home against Bearsted 4 and David LLoyd Kings Hill 1. The team was the same as for the ladies 3 except that Debbie Holden played with Webb in place of Parrett. Currently the team are top of the division and need to beat the team in second place in their last match to clinch promotion and a place in the divisional final. The ladies over 60’s team also had an excellent win at home to Canterbury by a set. Pout & Hanson managed to take a set from the Canterbury 1st pair who were slow to adapt to the Herne Bay courts but eventually lost 6-3, 2-6 0-1 in a match tie-break. They then went on to beat the Canterbury 2nd pair dropping just one game. The Bay’s 2nd pair, Diana High/Liz Harvey, also beat the opposition’s 2nd pair 6-4, 6-4. Despite then losing to the Canterbury number 1’s the match was secured by 5 sets to 4 and 36 games to 31. The mens 1st team travelled to Frindsbury in division 4 and beat their 2nd team 3-1. The team was Martin Beckley/Keith Clark and Graham Miles/Ian Cooke. It was a very close match with 3 out of the 4 rubbers being decided by match tie-breaks. The team were pleased to register their 1st win of the season and have 2 matches remaining to play. The mens veterans travelled to Tunbridge Wells to play their 1st team in division 1 and narrowly lost by a set. Both pairs beat the opposition’s second pair and lost to their very strong 1st pair. The unlucky team was Cooke & Miles and Beckley/ Eddie Fisher. Mixed 1 registered their 1st win of the winter in division 2 when they beat Blackheath 2 by 4 rubbers to nil. Both Bay pairs, Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs and Martin Beckley/Louise Tucker, won their rubbers without dropping a set. Finally mixed 4 were unlucky to lose by 2 sets away to Trottiscliffe 2 in division 7. Vanessa Webb/Dave Clements won both their rubbers. The team have lost both their matches so far and hope for better results this year.
The Deal Indoor league has also restarted after Christmas and there were wins for both the mens 1 and the ladies teams. Mens 1 beat Sandwich by 6 sets to 2 and the ladies beat Deal ITC 2 by 5 sets to 3. The mens team was Alex Kazakeos/Mark Kennard, who won 4 sets, and Martin Beckley/James Ley, who won 2. In the ladies Nicola Mileham/Diana High won 3 sets and Mary Gibbon/Christine Hanson won 2.
