Summer has arrived at last and members of Herne Bay tennis club have been busy over the last few weeks playing matches in 3 different leagues. In the Kent league the men’s 1st team have played 4 of their 5 matches in division 2. They had good wins away, 3-1 against Frindsbury 1 and 4-0 against Gravesham 2, and a narrow defeat by one set at home to Walmer 2. In these matches the full team of Graham Miles/Martin Beckley and Peter Elsden/Keith Clark were all available to play. The other defeat was at home to Sydenham 2 but with 2 wins the team should have done enough to stay in division 2 for next summer. The men’s 2nd team played UK Paper at home in division 7 and in a close match were unlucky to lose by a set. Ian Cooke/Eddie Fisher lost in 2 close sets to the UK paper 1st pair and then beat the 2nds 7-6, 6-2, while the Bay second pair, Gary Smith/James Wren, beat the opposition’s 2nd pair in 3 sets and lost to the 1st pair 2-6, 3-6. Overall the match was tied at 2 rubbers all but UK Paper won by 5 sets to 4. The men’s 3 were at home to Trottiscliffe 1 in division 8 and lost 1-3 with “the Daves” – Lawrence and Clemence winning the Herne Bay rubber. Ladies 1 have played one match at home to Sundridge Park 1 in division 1 and they won 3-1. Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs won both their rubbers easily 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-0 while the 2nd pair, Kay and Nicola Mileham, had 2 long rubbers. In their 1st rubber against the opposition 2nd pair they made a slow start losing the 1st set then stormimg back to win 6-3 and 10-2 in the match tie-break. Their second rubber followed the same patern but this time they were not able to clinch the match tie-break. The ladies 2nd team have played 2 matches and won one of them in division 3. In the 1st, away to Canterbury 2, only one round of the match was played due to heavy rain and Canterbury won both of the rubbers and in the other match at home to Knoll 2 the opposition only sent one pair and the Bay won 3-1. The Herne Bay players were Sue Toye/Danielle Miles and Debbie Holden with Sarah Pout for the 1st match and Christine Hanson partnered Holden in the 2nd match. Mixed teams have also been in action in the Kent League with mixed 2 beating Canterbury 3 at home 4-0 in division 3. Graham Miles/Nicola Mileham won 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-3 and Eddie Fisher/Danielle Miles were equally as dominant winning 6-2, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-0. The mixed 3rd’s 1st match of the season in division 5 was a very close contest at home to Hayes 2 with the Herne Bay team winning by 6 games. After the 1st round the Herne Bay team was 1 game ahead because their 1st pair, Eddie Fisher/Debbie Holden, lost 6-7, 4-6 and their 2nd pair, Sue Toye/Jeremy Loader won 7-5, 6-4. The second round was crucial and Fisher/Holden’s easy win 6-2, 6-0 sealed the match even when Toye/Loader lost they won enough games to win by 42 games to 36. The newly created 4th team played their 3rd match in division 7 but found David LLoyd Beckenham 2 too strong and lost 4-0. In Kent midweek matches there were 4-0 wins for the mens veterans team away to Chipstead Place and at home to Broadstairs. The teams were Keith Clark/Gary Sims and Martin Beckley/Bryan Packham against Chipstead and Clark with Beckley and Packham with Bob Toye against Broadstairs. The ladies1st team also played Broadstairs at home and won by 5 sets to 4. Anne Gibbs/Kay Mileham won both their rubbers easily dropping just 5 games and Sarah Pout/Sue Toye lost a close 1st rubber in a match tie-break to the opposition 2nd pair. Overall the sides were tied at 2 rubbers all but Herne Bay won 5-4 on sets.
The Dover and District league finally got under way after a few weeks of postponed matches due to rain. The men’s A team started their season in division 2 with an 8 sets to 0 win away to Sandwich. The team was Martin Beckley/Bryan Packham and Graham Miles/Gary Smith. The men’s B team secured a draw (4 sets all) at home to Sellindge in division 4. Dave Clemence/Dave Lawrence won 3 sets and Steve Howard/Bob Toye won one. The ladies team lost by 3 sets to 5 to Hythe A at home with Debbie Holden/Diana High claiming 2 sets and Liz Harvey/Mary Haldin 1. The mixed 1st team will find life difficult in division 1 so they were pleased to win their 1st match at home to Bridge A by 5 sets to 3 – the team was Martin Beckley/Christine Hanson (4 sets) and Sue Toye/Eddie Fisher (1set). The following match was an 8-0 defeat at home to Canterbury A! The mixed B team are enjoying their matches in division 4 but have yet to win more than a set in 2 attempts. Finally the only match to take place so far in the East Kent league was between Herne Bay’s 2 ladies teams and resulted in a 4-0 win for the 1st team. The ladies involved were Debbie Holden/Denise Parrett and Sue Toye/Christine Hanson for ladies 1 and Vanessa Webb/Anja Stileman and Vivienne Lord/Judy Wright for the 2nd team.
