Herne Bay players have also been busy playing matches in both the Kent and Dover & District leagues. The mens 2nd team had an excellent win on sets against DL Dartford at home in division 7. Alex Kazakeos/Mark Kennard won both their rubbers in straight sets and James Ley/Matt Hoffmeister were unlucky to lose both their rubbers in match tie-breaks. Overall the match was tied on rubbers but the Bay won 6-4 on sets to record their 1st win of the season. Ladies 2 played Sydenham 1 at home in division 2 and won 3-1. Herne Bay’s 1sts ,Danielle Miles/Debbie Holden, won both their rubbers 6-0, 6-3 and 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 in a match tie-break. The second pair, Sue Toye/Caroline Packer, beat the Sydenham 1st pair in a match tie-break despite Toye having returned from a tennis holiday injured. The team have 2 wins out of 3 matches played and are in 3rd place in the division. The Ladies 3rd team had struggled to get 4 players for their match away to Sevenoaks 5 in division 6 but luckily Janet Horton agreed to play despite having a bad back. Horton in partnership with Denise Parrett went on to play “a blinder” winning both rubbers 6-0, 7-5 and 6-2, 6-3 and the opposition had no idea that she was injured. The Bay’s other pair, Christine Hanson/Sarah Pout, beat the opposition’s 1sts 5-7 ,7-5, 1-0 and the 2nds 6-1, 6-3. An excellent and desperately needed 4-0 1st win of the season for the team. The mixed teams have not had such a good few weeks with defeats for both mixed 2 and mixed 3. In the mixed 3rds away match against Shooters Hill 1 in division 5 both Bay pairs, Eddie Fisher/Caroline Packer and Dave Lawrence/Diana High, beat the opposition’s 2nd pair and lost to their 1st. They ending up losing the match by 5 sets to 4 and 35 games to 24. The team have yet to win a match this season. The midweek mens veterans team are having an excellent season and in their latest match they beat Trottiscliffe at home by 4 rubbers to nil. The team was Ian Cooke/Graham Miles and Martin Beckley/Bob Toye. The team have won all their matches so far and dropped just one rubber.
Matches have been coming thick and fast in the Dover & District league. Mens A played Hythe A in division 1 at home and won 5-3. Graham Miles/Alex Kazakeos won 3 sets and Martin Beckley/Jerry Loader won 2. The team have now won 3 matches out of 3. The mens B team have had 3 matches in division 3 in which they have slowly improved from a 2-6 defeat at home to Chilham, a 3-5 defeat away to Bridge to a magnificent 7-1 win at home to Sellindge! The team who finally found the winning formula was Bob Toye/James Ley and Gary Smith/Dave Lawrence and at the end they went for a well deserved celebratory drink! The ladies team had 2 wins 7-1 away to Hythe and 6-1 away to Knoll B. In the match against Hythe B Vanessa Webb/Diana High drew against the first pair 4-6, 7-6 and beat the 2nds 7-6, 7-6. The rubber against the 2nd pair was bizarre with Webb & High losing a 4-0 lead in the 1st set and recovering from a similar deficit in the 2nd. Both sets were won by Herne Bay in tie-breaks. The Bay’s 2nd pair consisted of new member, Sheila Wyver, making her début in matches for the club paired with the experienced Sarah Pout. They won all their sets, 6-2, 7-5 against their opposite pair and 7-6, 6-1 against the 1sts. In the match against Knoll B Louise Tucker/Debbie Holden beat the 1st pair 6-2, 6-1 and the 2nds 6-1, 6-0. Bay’s 2nd pair, Webb & Pout, beat the 2nds 6-0, 6-2and had just dropped the first set 2-6 against the first pair when rain stopped play giving a match score of 6 sets to 1.
