Herne Bay tennis club celebrated the longest day of the year with a mixed American tournament. Twenty-two players entered and partners were drawn for and the players were divided into two groups. The format was for the pairs to play 4 games together against every other pair in their group and then split up and play 4 games against their partner. After the group matches the best lady and man from each group progressed to a final. Alex Kazakeos, Louise Tucker, Gary Smith and Caroline Packer were the successful players. The final followed the same format as the group matches and after the first 4 games of excellent tennis the players were level at 2 games all. The pairs swopped over and Smith/Tucker took a 2 -nil lead but Kazakeos /Packer fought back with some excellent play from the back of the court to level the match. In the deciding mini tie-break the pairings returned to the starting combination and Kazakeos/Tucker won 5-1.
There have been some excellent wins for Herne Bay teams in the Kent League. Mixed 1 finally won a match in division 2 at home to Broadstairs 1 and ensured their survival in the division. The match was very close with both first round rubbers going to deciding match tie-breaks. Bay’s first pair of Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs won their 1st set 7-5, lost the second 5-7 and then from 4-9 down in the tie-break won 7 points in a row to clinch the rubber. Meanwhile the second par, Keith Clark/Louise Tucker, made a slow start losing the 1st set 2-6 then recovering to win the second by the same score but lost the match tie-break. The teams were level going into the second round and Clark/tucker had exactly the same scores and result as the first round but Elsden/Gibbs won in straight sets and the win was secured by a set. The mixed 2nd team had a very similar close match at home to Bromley Cricket Club 3 in division 3. Graham Miles/Sue Toye lost their 1st rubber -64, 1-6 while Keith Clark/Debbie Holden won theirs 6-3, 7-6 so they were a few games down going into the second round. Miles and Toye managed to beat the BCC second string in 2 close sets but the match seemed to be slipping away as Clark & Holden struggled to cope with the heavy topspin of the opposition’s number one man and lost the set 1–6 but they managed to change their tactics to exclude the man and won the second set 6-4. Although they lost the match tie-break the match was won by 5 sets to 4 and also promotion to division 2 was secured with one game to play. Men’s 3 had an excellent 4-0 win at home to A1 Pharmaceuticals 2 in division 10. Dave Lawrence/Eddie Fisher and Lionel Hoskins/Dave Clemence both won their rubbers in straight sets and the team finish the season with 3 wins and two defeats. Ladies 2 played their last match in division 3 at home to Bearsted 1and won by a set. Both Herne Bay pairs beat the opposition’s second pair in straight sets and our 1st pair took a set from their 1st pair which secured the win. The team was Sue Toye/Danielle Miles and Sarah Pout/Debbie Holden. The team have lost just one match and will have to wait for the other teams in the division to finish before finding out if they have won promotion to division 2.
In the East Kent League there was an excellent 3-1 at home to Canterbury for ladies 1. The team was Debbie Holden/Denise Parrett and who won both rubbers and Christine Hanson/Sarah Pout who won one. In the Dover and District league the ladies won by 6 sets to 2 against Canterbury at home and mixed A destroyed St Margaret’s at home in division 2 winning by 8 sets to nil. The teams for these victories were Mary Haldin/Liz Harvey, Sarah Pout/Debbie Holden and Graham Miles/Caroline Packer and Ian Cooke/Sue Toye.
