Over the last couple of weeks Herne Bay teams have been completing their Kent league matches but unfortunately they have not been able to secure many wins. Mixed 1 played 2 very tight away matches in division 2 and lost them both. In the match against Canterbury 2 they lost 1-3 with Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs winning the single rubber very easily 6-0, 6-1 but they narrowly lost 5-7, 6-7 to the Canterbury 1st pair and the Bay’s 2nd pair lost in 3 sets. In their last match of the season against Bromley LTC 2 both Herne Bay pairs, Graham Miles/Louise Tucker and Ian Cooke/Anne Gibbs, beat the opposition’s 2nd pair and lost to their 1sts. Unfortunately Miles & Tucker dropped a set to the 2nds and the match was lost by 5 sets to 4. The team finished 3rd in the division. The mixed 3rd team also had a very close match away to Hythe 1 in division 5 which they lost by 1 game. Caroline Packer/Bryan Packham won both their rubbers, one of them in a 3rd set deciding tie-break and Sarah Pout/Dave Lawrence lost both theirs, also one in a 3rd set tie-break. The match was tied at 2-2 rubbers all, 5 sets all but Hythe won by 41 games to 40. The team are currently bottom of the division with one win but might escape relegation if the results of the last matches go in their favour. Ladies 1 finished their season in division 1 with 2 defeats away to Sundridge Park 1 and Sevenoaks 2. In the match at Sundridge Park the result was a 1-2 defeat with the final rubber not being completed due to failing light. Louise Tucker/Anne Gibbs beat the opposition 1st pair 3-6, 6-2 1-0 after they recovered from a slow start on the unfamiliar grass. They were leading by a set when play was halted. In their final match of the season they lost by 2 games. Tucker & Gibbs won both their rubbers 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2, 7-6 but unfortunately despite playing very well their 2nd pair, Kay Mileham/Danielle Miles just failed to take a set against the Sevenoaks second pair. The match was tied at 2 rubbers all 4 sets all and Sevenoaks won by 40 games to 38. The team have finished in 3rd place in the top division. There was success for the ladies 2 midweek team in division 4 in their last match of the season when they beat Blackheath at home by 2 games. The win secured promotion to the 3rd division for the team. The successful players were Vanessa Webb/Diana High and Mary Haldin /Anja Stileman.
The Dover and District league season is allso coming to a close and the Herne Bay ladies team finished their matches with a win and a draw at home. In the match agaisnt Knoll Ashford B thy won by 5 sets to 3. Debbie Holden/Denise Parrett won 3 sets and Mary Gibbon, who played with Sarah Pout despite a foot injury, won 2 sets. The match against Hythe A was a 4 sets all draw and Vanessa Webb/Debbie Holden won all 4 sets. The team have won 5 matches drawn 3 and lost 2 and will probably finish 2nd or 3rd in the division. Mixed A played their penultimate match in division 2 away to Hythe A and won 5-3. Nicola Mileham/Ian Cooke won 4 sets and Kay Mileham/Eddie Fisher, playing together for the 1st time, added one. The team have had 6 wins and one draw with one match left to play and are on course to win promotion to division 1 for next season.
Herne Bay tennis club has been well represented in Kent County teams over the summer. Keith Clark played for the 65’s team and in their recent match against Cheshire he won both his singles and doubles rubbers giving Kent a 4-1 win and 3rd place in the division. Gary Sims has had a successful season playing for the 70’s team in division 2 and with him winning 6 out of 8 rubbers the team won promotion to division 1. Lionel Hoskins helped the 75’s team to finish 2nd in division 1 behind a very strong Cheshire side with wins against the Cheshire number 2 pair and recently against both Somerset pairs. His partner for both matches was Graham Russell. Anne Gibbs, playing with Norma Smith from Broadstairs, are unbeaten in 3 matches this season playing for the ladies 55’s team and the team are in 2nd place in the 1st division with 2 matches to play. Kay Mileham has represented the ladies 60’s team in all their matches in division 1 and won 3 out of 6 rubbers. Sarah Pout played for the ladies 70’s team against Cheshire in division 1 and in partnership with Janet Broster, DL Dartford, she helped the team to a 1 game win over Cheshire.
