Herne Bay tennis club finished the winter Kent league season in fine style with 2 teams in the veterans finals. The ladies veterans 2 team qualified for their 2nd final in 2 seasons with a 3-1 win against Chipstead Place and a 2 set win against Gravesham 1. In the division 3 final they played Tunbridge Wells 3 at home, a repeat of the division 4 final the previous winter. The match was very close with both Herne Bay pairs, Debbie Holden/Vanessa Webb and Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson, beating the opposition’s second pair and losing to their 1st. Holden and Webb took a set in their 6-7, 6-4, 0-1 defeat and this proved to be decisive in winning the final by 5 sets to 4. The mens veterans team progressed to the final of division 2 and a return to division 1 with a 4-0 win against Beckenham 2. The final was away to Canterbury and with 2 key members of their team unavailable they were pleased to win a rubber against a Canterbury side who fielded 2 senior county players. Ian Cooke/Eddie Fielder beat the Canterbury 2nd pair in a match tie-break. The mens over 60’s team completed a good season in division 2 with a 3-1 win away at Trottiscliffe. The team was Lionel Hoskins/Dave Clements who won 2 rubbers and Bryan Packham/Greg Pearson who won 1. The win meant the side finished 3rd in the division. The Deal Indoor league was also completed last month with the ladies and mixed team both winning their divisions. The ladies went all season undefeated finishing with 2 excellent wins, 8 sets to 0 win against Sandwich and 8-1 against Hythe. The squad for this team were Kay & Nicola Mileham, Caroline Packer, Sue Toye and Debbie Holden.
The summer Kent League season is now underway. Mixed 1 played their 1st match in division 2 away to Sydenham 1 and won very easily 4-0 dropping just 11 games over 8 sets. The team was Peter Elsden/Anne Gibbs and Graham Miles/Louise Tucker. The mixed 3rd team had a similar easy win in division 5 at home to Hayes 2. The team was Bryan Packham/Caroline Packer and Dave Lawrence/Sarah Pout. The mens 3rd team played their 1st match of the season in division 9 away to Bromley Wendover 5 and had an excellent 4-0 win. The new pairing of Mark Townsend/Bryan Packham won both their rubbers although they had a tie-break in their 1st rubber and then went on to win the 2nd set 6-4. The Bay’s other pair of Lionel Hoskins/Eddie Fisher also went to a tie-break in their 1st rubber which they lost as they got used to the courts but they can back strongly to win the 2nd set to love and then the match tie-break. The ladies 2nd team and the midweek ladies 1 team were both unlucky to lose their 1st matches of the season at home to Gravesham 1 and away to Trottiscliffe 1 by 1 game and 3 games respectively. In the ladies 2 division 2 match the team had to cope with the late withdrawal of one of their players with Chicken pox and Sue Toye/Debbie Holden won both their rubbers.
