6th May. 13

Herne Bay tennis club members have enjoyed the improvement in the weather over the last couple of weeks and taken the opportunity to play a large number of matches in 3 different leagues. The Kent league matches were played predominately by the mixed teams with all 4 of them playing their first matches of the summer season. The mixed 1st team were unlucky to lose by 4 games away to Beckenham 2 in division 2. The match was finely balanced after the 1st round with the Bay’s 1st pair, Martin Beckley/Louise Tucker, losing to Beckenham’s 1st pair 2-6, 5-7 and Graham Miles/Anne Gibbs narrowly beating their opponents in a match tie-break. In the second round, Beckley & Tucker took a 4-0 lead in the 1st set only to be pegged back and finally win the set 6-4, they then had to recover from a 4-1 deficit to clinch the 2nd set and rubber 7-5. Meanwhile Miles & Gibbs lost their 1st set to the Beckenham 1st pair but then won the 2nd set 6-3. The deciding match tie-break was finally won by Beckenham 16-14 and meant that the match was tied at 2 rubbers all, 5 sets all but Beckenham won by 44 games to 40. The other 3 mixed teams were much more successful with both the 2nd and 4th teams winning 4-0 and the 3rd team by a 3-1 score line. The mixed 2nd team travelled to Bromley Cricket Club to play their 1st team in division 3 and won with the loss of just one set. The team was Danielle Miles/Keith Clark and Sue Toye/Graham Miles. Mixed 3 also played a Bromley Cricket club side, their 3rd, but they were at home and the match was in division 6. Eddie Fisher/Debbie Holden won both their rubbers without losing a set while Jerry Loader/Sarah Pout went to match tie-breaks in both their rubbers winning one. In the final mixed match the 4th team had a very impressive win against Brenchley and Matfield 1 at home in division 7. Dave Clemence/Vanessa Webb won both their rubbers which included beating the opposition’s 1st pair 1 & 0 – Clemence was obviously in top form having just heard that he had been selected to play for the Kent over 75’s team. Sarah Pout/Dave Lawrence also won both their rubbers but were taken to a match tie-break by the Brenchley 1st pair. There were 2 other matches in the Kent league, one for ladies 3 and the other for mens 2. The ladies 3rd team played Beckenham 4 at home in division 7 and won 3-1. Christine Hanson/Judy Wright won both their rubbers and Vanessa Webb/Anja Stileman won one – this was the team’s 2nd win of the season. Mens 2 started their season in division 7 with a hard fought win by 13 games away to Broadstairs 2. Both Bay pairs, Alex Kazakeos/James Ley and Ian Cooke/Jerry Loader, beat the opposition’s 2nd pair easily but lost to their strong 1st pair but they managed to pick up enough games in the sets they lost to ensure the win. In the Kent midweek league the ladies 1st team had an excellent win away to Bearsted 1 in division 1. The Bay’s 1st pair, Anne Gibbs/Kay Mileham had a marathon match against the Bearsted 1st pair finally losing out in a match tie-break but then went on to beat their second pair without dropping a game. The 2nd pair, Debbie Holden/Sue Toye, also beat the Bearsted 2nd pair easily and then went on to achieve an excellent win against their 1st pair through their aggressive net play. There were 2 matches in the East Kent league one for the ladies and one for the men. The ladies match was ladies 1 versus ladies 2 and was a win for ladies 1 by three rubbers to one. Danielle Miles/Anne Gibbs were too strong for both the 2nd team pairs and only dropped 2 games in 4 sets. The closest rubber was between the 1st pair of the 2nd team and the 2nd pair of the 1sts which was balanced at 1 set all when Christine Hanson from the 1st team who was partnering Debbie Holden, had to retire with a knee injury. Sue Toye/Vanessa Webb were the 2nd team’s 1st pair and Anja Stileman and Judy Wright the 2nds. The mens East Kent team had an excellent 4-0 win at home to a very young and experienced Bearsted 2 team. Bob Toye partnered Mark Townsend, who was playing in his 1st ever tennis match and Lionel Hoskins played with Dave Lawrence.
In the Dover and District league there was also an inter-club match when mixed A played mixed B in division 2. Mixed 1 won by 8 sets to 0 but the match was throughly enjoyed by all the players. The A team was Graham Miles/Caroline Packer and Ian Cooke/Sue Toye and the 2nd team Bob Toye/Diana High and Bryan Packham/Lesley Taylor. The ladies team had 2 home matches one against Knoll ATC A and the other against Hythe B. In the match against Knoll Debbie Holden/Vanessa Webb won all 4 of their sets to ensure the match was a draw. The pair managed to keep their concentration and close out their 4th set even after the floodlights went out and they had to wait 20minutes for them to come back on. In their other match, against Hythe B, the team was Mary Haldin/Anja Stileman and Liz Harvey/Pauline Pierce and they had an excellent 8-0 win. Mens A started their season in division 1 with a 4-4 draw away to Canterbury A. Both Herne Bay pairs beat Canterbury’s 2nd pair and lost to their 1st. The team was Martin Beckley/Jerry Loader and Gary Smith/Alex Kazakeos.
