Herne Bay tennis club have had a very successful winter Kent league season with 3 teams gaining promotion and 3 others just missing out on 1st place by a few games resulting in them coming second in their groups. The ladies veterans 2 team were the most successful team winning the division 4 divisional play-off at the weekend away to Tunbridge Wells 3 by a set. In the 1st round Vanessa Webb/Caroline Packer took a set from the Tunbridge Wells 1st pair, after recovering from dropping the 1st set to love, but then lost in a deciding tie-break and Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson beat the 2nds 7-6, 6-1. In the second round Webb & Packer beat the opposition’s second string in straight sets and Hanson & Pout lost to the 1sts, also in straight sets. The match was tied at 2 rubbers all but Herne Bay won by 5 sets to 4. Both teams will be playing in division 3 next winter. There were 2 other Herne Bay team in divisional finals, Ladies 1 in the division 2 play-off and ladies 3 in the division 8 play-off. Ladies 1 lost 3-1 away to Canterbury 2 with Louise Tucker and Anne Gibbs wining the Herne Bay rubber and Ladies 3 lost by a set away to Beckenham 3. In this match Webb & Denise Parrett won both rubbers but had to put up with a very partisan crowd while playing the Beckenham 1st pair and consequently dropped a set. In other matches the ladies over 60’s team beat United 4-0 at home. The team was Sarah Pout/Kay Mileham and Diana High/Mary Gibbon. The ladies veterans 1 team played a crucial match in division 2 away to Bromley, the winners would take the division and promotion to division 1. Unfortunately the team struggled to adapt to the fast, wet astroturf courts and lost by 2 sets. Both Herne Bay pairs, Kay & Nicola Mileham and Debbie Holden/Anne Gibbs beat the opposition second pair in 3 sets and lost to the strong 1st pair in straight sets. The team will have to try again next year for promotion.
In the indoor league at Deal there was an excellent 6 sets to 2 win for the Herne Bay ladies against Broadstairs. The Milehams won all their sets and Sue Toye/Debbie Holden won 2. The team is unbeaten so far with one match remaining. The mixed team played an very enjoyable and competitive match against Ashford 1 which resulted in a draw on rubbers but a 5 sets to 4 win for Ashford. Anne Gibbs/Ian Cooke just beat the opposition 1st pair 5-7, 6-3 and 10 points to 7 in the deciding tie-break and then went on to beat the second string 6-3, 6-0. Dave Lawrence/Diana High had a close second set against the Ashford number 2’s but just lost it 5-7. It was the first defeat for the team this season.
