Herne Bay tennis club’s busy season had a slight rest over the Bank Holiday period with only a handful of matches being played. There were away matches in the Kent League for both ladies 2 and 3 resulting in one win and a very close defeat. The ladies 2 travelled to Gravesham in division 2 to play their 1st team and won 3-1. Both Bay’s pairs, Danilelle Miles/Debbie Holden and Caroline Packer/Sarah Pout, won their very close 1st round matches in match tie-breaks. In the 2nd round Miles & Holden took advantage of the tiring 2nd pair and won 6-1, 6-1 and Packer & Pout were again involved in a tight rubber against the Gravesham 1st pair which they narrowly lost 4-6, 6-7. The 3-1 win puts the team in 3rd place in the division with 3 matches to play. The ladies 3 were unlucky to lose by 8 games away to Hawkhurst United in division 6. Both Herne Bay pairs, Denise Parrett/Vanessa Webb and Sarah Pout/Christine Hanson, beat the United 2nd pair and lost to their strong 1st pair. The match ended as a draw 2-2-on rubbers, 4-4 on sets and United were the winners by 40 games to 32. In the midweek league ladies 1 beat Tunbridge Wells 1 away in division 1 by a set. The match was played on very soft grass courts which caused some very extraordinary bounces. In the 1st round Bay’s 1st pair, Anne Gibbs/Debbie Holden, won the 1st set 7-5 then lost the 2nd and the deciding tie-break they then went on to beat the Tunbridge Wells 2nd pair 6-1, 6-1. The 2nd pair had a good win, 6-3, 6-3, against their opposite number and then lost to the Tunbridge Wells 1st pair. The match was level at 2 rubbers all but the Bay won by 5 sets to 4 and they have now won 2 matches and lost 1. Midweek Ladies 2 also had a match away to Sevenoaks 3 in division 4. After a last minute change to the team, they were pleased to win 4-0. Christine Hanson/Diana High won 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-1. Liz Harvey/Mary Haldin, playing as the 2nd pair, won 6-3, 6-0 and then came back from the loss of the 1st set, 1-6, against the Sevenoaks 1st pair to win 7-5 and 13-11 in the match tie-break. In the East Kent league the newly formed and very young Bay 2nd team played their first match in division 2 away to Bearsted 2 and were surprised to find that all the opposition were younger than them. The more experienced and mature Herne Bay team won 4-0. Matt & Laurence Hoffmeister won their 2 rubbers 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-0 while the second pair, Arie Fielder-Guerts/Guy Farmer, won 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4 – an excellent start for the team. There was only one match in the Dover and District league which was between Herne Bay ladies and Knoll A played at Wye. The match ended in a 4 sets all draw. Louise Tucker/Vanessa Webb won 3 sets and Sarah Pout/Mary Haldin won 2.
Two Herne Bay players have been involved in county matches over the last week. Lionel Hoskins played for Kent 75’s and over at Canterbury ITC, Polo Farm and helped the team to a 4-0 win against Suffolk. Hoskins played his 1st rubber with John Hills (Margate) and won 7-6, 6-4 then he teamed up with team captain Graham Russell to win 6-1, 6-4. Anne Gibbs played for Kent 55’s away at St George’s Hill Tennis Club Weybridge against Surrey and although she won both her rubbers in match tie-breaks playing with Norma Smith (Broadstairs) the team lost 2-3.
