Tennis players at Herne Bay tennis club have managed to combine playing matches and watching Wimbledon over the last 2 weeks. Unfortunately they haven’t managed to convert the tips they have picked up from the professionals into wins in the Kent league. Both mixed 2 and 3 lost their recent matches. Mixed 2 travelled to Sydenham 2 to play their 2nd team in division 2 and just lost by a set. Both the Bay pairs, Graham & Danielle Miles and Ian Cooke/Sue Toye, beat the Sydenham2nd pair but Toye & Cooke dropped a set in their 6-3, 4-6, 0-1 in a match tie-break win. The mixed 3rd team played at home against Kemsing 1 in division 5 and lost 1-3 in a match that was delayed by torrential rain. Caroline Packer/Eddie Fisher won the single rubber for Herne Bay when they returned to the courts after they had dried out. Over the last week there were successes for the Dover and District teams particularly the mens B who registered their 1st win of the season last week and followed that with another one this week. They played Chilham away in division 3 and won 6 sets to 2. Bob Toye/Matt Hoffmeister and Gary Smith/Dave Lawrence both won 3 sets each. The team need one more win in their last match to equal their record of 3 wins in a season set in 2010. The ladies team drew 4-4 at home to Hythe B. The team consisted of 2 players playing for Herne Bay for the 1st, one for the 1st time ever, Sue Brinn, and the other for her 1st time this season, Judy Wright. They combined together to win one set against the Hythe first pair and Vanessa Webb/Christine Hanson beat the Hythe second pair 7-5, 6-1 and drew with the 1sts 5-7, 6-1. In mixed division 2 Bay’s mixed A team beat Canterbury C away 7 sets to 1. Ian Cooke/Anne Gibbs won all their sets and Sue Toye/Graham Miles won 3 sets, just losing their last set in a tie-break. Mixed B played two matches in division 3 losing the first and drawing the second. In the match at home to Ash they lost 3-5 and Bryan Packham/Lesley Taylor won 2 sets and Gary Smith/Helen Lipyeat won one. Their second match was also at home, this time against Hythe B, and the same team played with both pairs winning 2 sets each to make the match a 4 sets all draw.
