The Winter season at Herne Bay has been particularly disappointing both for the teams and the appalling weather they have had to cope with but there were some notable successes to report. The men’s and ladies second teams both finished top of the sections of their divisions and won promotion for next winter. The men move into division 8 and the ladies into 3. Both teams also qualified for the divisional finals in which the men lost to A1 Pharmaceuticals and the ladies have yet to play theirs which will be at home to Tunbridge Wells 3 at the end of the month. A couple of other Bay teams had excellent seasons : mixed 2 only lost one match all season in division 4 and narrowly missed promotion and similarly men’s 3 only had one defeat to the eventual winners of division 10. Mixed 4 finished their season with a cliff-hanger were whoever lost would be relegated from division 7 but they came through magnificently with a 4-0 win. The team was Dave Clements/Anja Stileman and Dave Lawrence/Diana High. It is a relief that the winter season is now over especially for the match secretary who had a record number of matches to rearrange over the season due to the poor weather.
Hurrah! The sun decided to shine on Herne Bay tennis club for the start of their summer season at the weekend a welcome change from the winter. Saturday was Club Opening and many members enjoyed the warm afternoon sunshine, competitive tennis and a sumptuous afternoon tea. The next day the summer season started in earnest with 2 Kent League matches being played at Herne Bay. The ladies 3rd team made a good start to their season in division 7 with a 3-1 win against Parklangley 4. In the first round both pairs went to deciding tie-breaks in the 3rd set and we were successful in one and lost the other. Vanessa Webb/Judy Wright won their tie-break and then went on to beat the opposition’s 1st pair 6-4, 6-3 while Christine Hanson/Pauline Pierce recovered from their 1st round set-back to beat the Parklangley 2nd pair 6-3, 6-3. In the other match the mens 3rd team played Knoll Orpington 4 in division 9 and lost 1-3. Dave Lawrence/Eddie Fisher won the rubber for Herne Bay beating the Knoll 2nd pair 6-2, 6-4.
