Herne Bay have posted some excellent results recently in the East Kent League.

After a disappointing away loss at Whitstable, the Men’s 2 team completed their fixtures in Division 2 by winning all their 3 remaining matches. At home to Broadstairs 2, the new pairing of Martin Feakins/Dan Weigh produced some steady tennis in their first rubber to pip their opponents in 3 sets. Bay’s 2nd pair Bob Toye/Steve Howard won their opening rubber in two close fought sets 6-4, 7-5. The reverse rubbers saw Feakins/Weigh having little trouble despatching the visitors 2nd pair losing only one game whilst Toye/Howard found the going tough and although losing in straight sets, Herne Bay ran out winners 3-1.

With a much change line-up Bay travelled to Chilham for their next match that unfortunately was affected by the weather. Bay’s 1st pair this time was debutant Aiden Blackall partnering Keith Curtis who comfortably won their rubber whilst Bob Toye/Adam Biddle took a set off the hosts 2nd pair. With the weather deteriorating rapidly it was decided to finish at that point with Bay winning by the odd set.

Bay rang the changes again for their final fixture at home to Deal ITC. This time Mark Townsend/Dan Weigh set the ball rolling with a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 opening rubber. Bob Toye this time partnered Greg Pearson and having raced through the 1st set 6-1, their opponents bounced back reversing the scoreline to level. Toye/Pearson’s experience came through in a close deciding championship tie-break that again proved pivotal. The reverse rubbers saw Townsend/Weigh power on to win 6-1, 6-1 whilst Toye/Pearson ran out of steam and fell in straight sets. With the match tied 2-2 in rubbers, Bay won 5-4 in sets.

Bay Ladies travelled to Broadstairs in Division 1 and came away with a fine 3-1 win. Caroline Packer/Debbie Holden were far too strong for the hosts 1st pair and lost just the 2 games to record a straight sets victory. Meanwhile Bay’s 2nd pair Sarah Pout/Isobel Warnock also got off to a flyer also winning their rubber in straight sets although they were taken to a 2nd set tie-break. In the reverse rubbers Packer/Holden secured the victory beating the hosts 2nd pair 2-6, 3-6 whilst Pout/Warnock lost in 2. With this their 3rd straight victory and topping the table, all eyes will be on Bay’s final fixture at home to Deal ITC.
