The end of the winter season is fast approaching and Herne Bay teams have been completing their Kent League matches. The mixed 2nd team played their last match in division 4 at home to Kemsing 1 and won by 5 games. The teams were level on rubbers after the 1st round when Keith Clark/Debbie Holden lost in straight sets, 4-6, 5-7 and Graham Miles/Sue Toye won 7-6, 6-2. Herne Bay held a narrow lead of one game going into the second round. Clark & Holden beat the Kemsing second pair very easily 6-1, 6-1 and although Miles & Toye lost they won enough games to secure the win by 40 games to 35. The team only lost one match in division 4 by just 3 games but will probably finish second and remain in the same division next winter. The only other match at the weekend was the mixed 3rd team last match away to Bromley CC 2 in division 6 which also resulted in a win by 5 games! The Bay’s 1st pair, Caroline Packer/Eddie Fisher, won both their rubbers 6-2, 6-4 against the 1st pair and 11-9 in a match tie-break against their seconds after being down in the tie-break. The Bay second pair, Sarah Pout/Dave Lawrence, lost in a tie-break to the second pair and then narrowly lost 4-6, 6-7 to the 1st pair. The match was tied 2-2 on rubber, 5-5 on sets and Herne Bay won by 43 games. This was the team’s first win of the season and they hope to avoid relegation if Bromley CC 2 loose their last match next weekend.
