Great Turn Out For GBTW

29th Jun. 14

Herne Bay tennis club held a very successful Great British Tennis Weekend Open Day at the Club last weekend. It was part of an initiative organised by British Tennis to encourage more people to get involved in playing tennis. The club offered a range of free activities for children and adults using all 4 tennis courts and part of the old astroturf pitch. The activities on offer were mini tennis, family tennis, cardio tennis, table tennis and use of a ball machine and service speed gun. A magnificent 85 people took the opportunity to try everything on offer and were helped by club members and coaches to get the most from the day. The most popular activity on the day was family tennis were families were able to borrow rackets and balls and play together under the guidance of two club members, Bryan Packham and Bob Toye. The cardio tennis also proved to be popular as well as tiring as Graham Miles and Jerry Loader kept the participants hitting balls and chasing around the court for 30 minutes at a time. Their final session concluded with a 5 a side volley ball style match which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The fastest serve recorded on the day by a child, Rebecca Curland, was 49mph and 68mph by an adult, Ross MacRae. A big thanks go to all the members of HBTC who gave up their time to make the day such a success.
