Milly and Robbie Shine on Junior Finals Day

24th Aug. 17

Herne Bay Tennis Club’s Junior Tournament took place over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd July.

The standard of all the players was significantly high in all age ranges.   In the Mini ball categories, the participation rate had tripled from previous years, due to an influx of new members this year.

The Mini Reds kicked off the order of play with a round robin group format. This was slightly different this year, due to the volume of players, in which there were two runners up being young Charlie Weigh and James Critchley.  Ethan Roumania played the more consistant tennis in the final play off to take the mini red title for the first time.  Next up was the Mini Lower Orange group which saw 12 impressive players entered. This saw Charlie’s sister, Lily Weigh defeat Oliver Bonnie 7-3 to take her first title in this category.   The Upper Orange group saw a good standard of players.  The final was between no 1 seed and last year’s winner, John-Paul Mulligan against up and coming Milly Feakins.  Both players battled well, but John-Paul played the more consistent game just winning 10-7 to take the title for the second year running.  Lastly, the mini Green category finished off the mini groups.  It consisted of John-Paul and Milly again battling it out with some excellent play.  It was John-Paul that won 4-0 in an even game that the score line didn’t really reflect, as at least three games were deuce games.

The hard ball groups kicked off with both the U14 Boys and Girls singles.  It was nice to see the U14 Girls event go ahead, as in recent years, this could not run due to limited players.  This saw young Scarlett Pope against experienced Milly Mileham.  It was Milly, who showed her consistent tennis to win convincingly by only dropping one game to take the title for the first time.  The Boys singles entries were slightly down on last year.  The final consisted of two regular up and coming players, Robbie Benka and Sam Hodge.  This game showed both the boys playing some excellent groundstrokes.  It was endearing to see Sam’s competitiveness and personality shining through in his play, however, it was Robbie the more experienced player who took the title 6-2, 6-1.   Robbie also went onto win the U18 singles against last year’s winner, Henry Mileham.  It was good to see Henry on the court, as it was only the third time he had played since winning last year!  The court craft from Robbie and more attacking play went in his favour and he secured the title for the first time 6-3, 6-2.

The U18 Girl’s singles final saw Kimarie Fielder-Geurts against Milly Mileham. This was an exciting game.  Both girls showed sheer determination and both played a very high standard of tennis.  Milly just edged Kimarie by winning 6-4, 6-4 to take the title.

The U14 boys doubles finalists saw new pairings of Sam Hodge/Troy Judd against Robbie Benka/Ryan Jameson.  This was probably the most even matches of the day and it was thrilling to watch with some brilliant net play.  However, Robbie and Ryan became champions winning 6-2, 7-6.  This was followed by the U18 boys doubles, again seeing Robbie teamed up with Adam Lynch against last year’s winners, Elliot Wraight and Jos Fielder-Geurts.  This was another thrilling game to watch.  All of the boys demonstrated a high level of tennis but it was the new partnership of Robbie and Adam who took the title, 7-5, 6-3 making this Robbie’s fourth win of the day!

The last match of the day was the U18 mixed final between brother and sister pairing, Henry and Milly against Adam and Kimarie.  Again, this was of a high standard but it was Henry and Milly who secured victory winning 6-3, 6-2.

The most improved junior boy player was awarded deservedly to Josh Deverson and Most improved girl player to the up and coming Milly Feakins.

Thank you to all the players and parents who supported over the weekend and to the coaches in assisting running the tournament.  A special thank you to Chloe Maple, Vice President of the Tennis Club who came and supported over the weekend and presented the players with their winning trophies.
