Winning Weekend for KL Teams

10th Sep. 13

Two Herne By teams were in Kent League Finals at the weekend. The ladies 2nd team played Chipstead 1 at home in division 3 in a match that lasted over 5 hours. In the 1st round Bay’s first pair of Danielle Miles/Debbie Holden played against Chipstead’s county 50’s player and her partner losing the 1st set, 6-2, but fighting back to take the 2nd set on a tie-break only to finally succumb 7-10 in a champions tie-break after 2.5h. Herne Bay’s second pair, Sarah Pout/Caroline Packer, were also involved in a marathon match in their 1st match against the Chipstead 2nd pair. They narrowly lost the 1st set on a tie-break, fought back from 2-5 down to take the 2nd set 7-5 and then won the deciding tie-break 10-7. The team started the 2nd round just a few games down but with all to play for still. Miles & Holden won relatively easily 6-1, 6-4 but watched helplessly as Pout & Packer lost their 1st set 0-6 and trailed by 2 games to 5 in the 2nd set. BUT a fight back was on the cards and Pout & Packer steadily clawed their way back into the set and took it to a tie-break which they won. This proved to be the match winning set because although they went on to lose the champions tie-break they secured the match by 6 sets to 5. The following day the mixed 3 team, with Packer and Holden, travelled to St John’s, Tunbridge Wells to play their 1st team in the final of division 6. Eddie Fisher & Debbie Holden beat the St John’s 1st pair, 6-4, 6-3 but lost to the 2nds 4-6, 4-6. Jerry Loader and Caroline Packer won both their rubbers but were taken to a 3rd set by the 1st pair after being level 6-4, 6-2 on sets. they won the set 6-2 and secured an excellent 3-1 win for the team.
